I sure like the neck yoke/britchen combo on those mountain horses. Something sexy about about a half harness….
March 16, 2011 at 8:06 pm #66003Lanny CollinsParticipantblue80, I thought the mountain pony pics were kinda neat as well. Also wondering if the wagon had a stiff or drop tongue. I would think a stiff tongue would be a little easier on their neck but it is amazing when you think you have seen about everything, something new/different shows up.:)
March 16, 2011 at 9:04 pm #65977bivolParticipantTim,
all the yoke designs (except the fixed angle bow design) are pretty much, at least in some areas, made with comfort in mind. if one’d try making such a yoke, making the neck seats would be the trickiest part. would have made the difference, since it was mountainous terrain.Wolfgang, that’s true, i hadn’t thought of that before! still, this yoke actually being rather crude in terms of “fine tuning” to the size of every ox, i think they didn’t see it as a neccesity. as long as the ox pulled, it was fine…
in fact, the third type was probably used because in some situations a type 1 yoke couldn’t (like for logging)… just a guess, i dunno.
the horse wagon tongue is a fixed tongue, here people never use a drop tongue for horses.
those are original ponies from this region, mixed more or less, (IMO commoner’s horses in medieval Europe looked similar) an excellent horse, tough and modest.March 21, 2011 at 1:18 pm #65972VickiParticipantBivol, thanks for these interesting posts. I love those simmentals! I enjoy seeing the “older” type of cattle, breeds before they were super-specialized like they are in the U.S. Seeing cattle working inother places with other kinds of equipment, too. I saw one of those kinds of yokes on ebay recently, but to see one being used is great.

as for those yokes, they sell em here, too, they cost about 20$…
Fabian, you’re right, the base plank can be adjusted to hight, but it’s not moving when the oxen get yoked.

The yokes with the bows or those with the plank ?
If the second: Please bring one with you to me when you will visit me here one time. 😉
You know you are wellcome…..Wolfgang
March 24, 2011 at 6:54 pm #65979bivolParticipantok then!

oh yeah, i’m thinking of making a visit to central europe, i’ll go to my aunt’s in netherlands, and to germany, to Kommern, so i guess i’ll drop by then!
thanks!

😀 if that is planned for this year, it will be big fun! 😀

This year I will not at home when Kommern takes place (only the Sunday, I have a market date) . But what about a visit in the week before ? We will hitch up and make a tour like we did with Elke in 2009.
And without deciding about something which I can not decide about:
I guess, a bed near Kommern will be easily found (ox drovers are everywhere) 😉Wolfgang
March 24, 2011 at 10:24 pm #65980bivolParticipantThank you!
then i’ll have no option but to come by:D
the pictures look great, i can’t wait to take a drive!Elke, thank you for the date of the gathering! it must be newer, i looked for it a few months ago and it wasn’t there. i hope i’ll be able to go!
so i hope i’ll have no exams, autumn exam season, then! i have to speed it up!
right!… Wolfgang, since it is possible that i will have some exams left and so there is a possibility that i will not be able to go to Kommern in the autumn, i’ll let you know so i can drop by on a visit in some other time, like during summer – being an animal science student i’d like to learn everything useful i can learn, and that includes farm chores, too!
so, if it happens i’ll have trouble with exams (i’ll know that in early summer, so i’ll tell you beforehand) then i’ll tell you so we arrange for a different time for visit, like in summer.
i’m flexible.but i hope that i’ll be able to go!

thanks Nat! i’ll have that in mind, and while in Holland, guess i’ll make a skip over the channel (under it actually) while in the neighborhood!
oh man, i’ll become a wandering student this summer!:D
