I have a 9 year-old Percheron gelding. 17.5 hands and 1700 lbs or so, that I need to move on to another farm. Pete, is black with a white blaze, I have had him for nearly three years. In addition to lots of work at home on our farm, I log commercially with my team. Simply put, Pete does not have the mental makeup to be a commercial logging horse. He does well with smaller loads but when asked to pull a big load he lets his partner do most of the work, and I am worried that this balky behavior will eventually have an effect of the health of my other horse. In all other working scenarios, Pete does his share, but I need someone with more tenacity in the woods. That said, Pete is a wonderful horse otherwise, but I cannot afford to keep three here. He can work single and as a team, skidding, on a single or team arch, mower, harrows, spreader, bobsled, wagon, sleigh, plow, etc. He is very comfortable with falling trees and chainsaws, as well as tractors and log forwarders. He has a calm and steady demeanor, and my eight year old can lead him and ride him. She also drives my team from time to time. He stands without stocks for trimming and shoeing, and I do both myself here at the farm. He is shod now, and I can reset the shoes or remove them depending on where he is headed. He sees the vet once a year for shots and teeth floating, and does well with him. Pete has good teeth and feet, and is in oustanding shape. His collar, which fits well, will come with him so that the new owner can get him right to work. I want Pete to go to somewhere will be be used, not a pasture ornament or solely for riding. He is too good a horse for that! I spent about $1500 for him, and he is more seasoned horse now with lots of work in the past three years. I am asking $1500 and you will get a lot of good horse for that money. Please email or call 802-345-7488. Also, I can email you pics directly or you can go to alltogetherfarm.com to see a photo. Thanks.

Well, I have decided to keep the Suffolk and find a new team mate for him. Last time I needed a horse I looked locally only. After putting visiting more than a dozen horses and putting some 500 miles on my truck, I am trying something different this time around. I did look some around here, but I have decided to head out to PA to Andy Carson’s place, and, barring something unexpected, come home with his mare. This process is always tough for me. I have never started with young, green broke animals, so I have had to rely on the work done with my horses by others before me. And, I have had good luck with this method. I hope this mare is a good fit, but to be honest I never really know what I have until I get home and do few jobs with the animal. I am not heading back to work away from our farm until the end of mud season, so I will have some time to get Bob and Val on the same page. Then, we head off to see what trouble we can get into!
