he knows his saddle, he knows reigns, he has had children sit on him for a minute or two, he has carried a little weight, he knows his verbal commands …………that’s just it for now
by the way: have you also noted, when you teach them something and let it be for a while, they will recall even better what you asked of them later?October 24, 2009 at 7:51 pm #50591RodParticipant@CharlyBonifaz 11975 wrote:

Kind of like humans do the same thing, at least I do.

I only SAT on angus, we didn’t move anywhere until he was almost 2 and even now I only ride for less than half an hour.
Yes I find that even if in one session they don’t seem to be getting it, if I put them away and let them think about it for a few days, next time they seem to have figured it out for themselves and do it straight off!

honestly, dunno.
i thinjk it’s not a book about oxen, oxen are just a part of his book about exploring(?) Africa. check it out in google books, maybe it could have something more of traveling on oxen in the book, they DID travel on oxen…February 3, 2010 at 8:26 am #50625Nat(wasIxy)ParticipantOxnun – Progress is being made, but so far I’m just teacing him how to be ridden. I have taken on the role of Chief Shepherd 😀 on the farm and plan to expand the sheep side of things – my next step will be riding him out just to check the sheep!
Bivol – I figured they couldn’t ride round africa on oxback and only mention the oxen once in the whole thing, but you never know!
February 4, 2010 at 8:30 pm #50599bivolParticipantixy, from the little i red is that for traveling in unexplored inland in some cases oxen were well prefered to either horses or mules. some englishmen, who at first shunned the idea of riding oxen and instisted on horses were soon proven otherwise. because oxen they were tougher, stronger, and could take the hardships of traveling better.
there are descriptions of breaking them, etc..
February 5, 2010 at 9:23 am #50626Nat(wasIxy)ParticipantWell I’ve gone and bought it now, came into a bit of money so I paid off my debts, bought a saddle and all the bits and ‘Lake Ngami’ will take care fo the rest of it lol – Hope it’s a really good read!!
I’ve heard another account of someone in the ye olde british empire days going up the nile area with his wife – both mounted on oxen. Not sure if there’s a book to go with it though?
