Someone on this site mentioned using vegetable oil en lieu of bar and chain oil for the chainsaw. I bought 5 gallons of soy oil recently and was wondering how you might thin it out for winter use (it coagulates outside).
Thanks.

Biodegradable from Bailey’s doesn’t solidify. That is a limitation for this product in lower temperatures. Maybe an insulated container if you were going to keep it outside all day. We also often have a burn barrel at the landing and we have set it near that. Coming in for a warm up and refueling and oil is sort of a reward for working in the cold… It’s like leaving the water at the landing when skidding, a little reward for bringing out another skid. We don’t always have vegetable oil available. But it does work fine to lube the chain. Harder to do nearly anything really clean it seems.

I’ve used some veg based B&C, but I think it has something added to it anyway, to increase tackiness. I think straight veg will just evaporate, or burn, won’t it? I must admit I haven’t made much progress in this arena. I’ll look into it this week.
