Vermont TV station WCAX-TV will air a feature about animal power in the state during the Mid-day news Agricultural program “Across the Fence” today July 15th. UVM Extension and WCAX-TV collaborated on this presentation featuring interviews with Farmer/Educator/Teamster John Hayden, of The Farm Between in Jeffersonville, and Carl Russell of Earthwise Farm & Forest in Bethel. The program will also be available streaming from the TV station web-site this week.

I went to Vermont Channel 3 TV web site and couldn’t find a link to the video stream, can you post that address or how to find it on the net?
Looking forward to seeing you on the tube….
July 17, 2008 at 2:36 pm #46958Carl RussellModeratorI have not had any success viewing the program on-line, but wcax.com is the primary site then enter the “Local Guide” on the sidebar menu, scroll down to “Across the Fence”, then “Watch Streaming Video”, Then “Animal Power on Vermont Farms (7/15)”.
Seems simple enough, but it just won’t work for me without a whole bunch of upgrades. Hope some of you can get access.
I don’t get broadcast TV either, so I haven’t even seen it yet. We are supposed to get the DVD. I’ve heard that it is “good”, but middle of the road. The supposition is that animal power is an option, IF people are inclined. So we will save our proclamations for when we have captive audiences. Carl
July 18, 2008 at 11:26 am #46960JeanParticipantI was able to see the video. Good job Carl. Do you mind if I mention it in the next newsletter for GMDHA? I should be working on that now, instead of watching videos of draft horses.
July 18, 2008 at 12:59 pm #46957Carl RussellModeratorYes Jean, it would be great to pass the word around. We also got the DVD yesterday, and I do think it was well done, and handled well. We may post it on U-tube and link it to the web-sites. Carl

It is fine to see the work with the horse !
July 18, 2008 at 10:30 pm #46962jen judkinsParticipantI saw the piece on the news as suggested. It was very well done and I think the dialogue after was interesting and thought provoking. Good job! Jen.
July 21, 2008 at 2:38 pm #46954Gabe AyersKeymasterGreat job Carl. You put it all in a realistic perspective based on your real life experience. Mentors are the key….that is why we use the mentor apprentice network to train new Biological Woodmen…
Most impressive for me was the lack or absence of nostalgia and romance for the past….and a view for the future…. good job man. The fellow with the Suffolk horse looked good to, or I guess they were Suffolk.
September 6, 2008 at 1:55 pm #46959Carl RussellModeratorOn Friday September 12, during the noon time news on WCAX Channel 3, on the “Across The Fence” segment (generally between 12:12pm and 12:30pm) they will air a studio interview of Lisa and I reviewing the short video clip discussed above, and talking about the upcoming Northeast Animal-Power Field Days. I’m pretty sure that people who are out of broadcast range can view the news on their website at http://www.wcax.com/

I have been trimming and shoeing them in the past for a number of years.
He also has a good looking colt out of one of the mares that he will be putting in harness this year.
John has even plowed his driveway of snow in the winter with this team.
Nice job Carl. Very well done.

Can you give us an exact address to see your latest interview on the Across the Fence segment? The first one was great.Sorry for this bother, it is just a request from a computer challenged fan….
Sincerely,
September 14, 2008 at 9:09 pm #46956Carl RussellModeratorSorry, “Across The Fence” is just a special interest program, so they don’t stream the actual interviews. We did get a DVD though, it was just Lisa and me sitting in a “homey” set answering questions about the field days following a replaying of the pre-recorded video segment. Nothing earth shattering. Thanks for the interest though.
We did get a few phone calls, and e-mails following the show, including a candidate for congress with all kinds of ideas of how we could use our event to cultivate interest among politicians. Oh yeah that’s high on our priority list!!!
