    hey there,
we are up the coast a bit, but if you didn’t mind a drive, you could swing by and look at our scoot. i have given most of my scoot irons away, but i still kept one scoot, and i could show you the irons, and you could make a set or we could make up a set for you. scoot irons last forever. when a scoot rots, you can rewood one in a very shorttime. scoots come in all shapes and size and if one doesn’t suit you, you can design another, knowing its only going to last a season or two and you can design another or rebuild the one you like. they were meant to be built in the woodlot from four logs pinned together, but they are a bit better built now thanks to sawmills and better tools. sleds are a different animal and we some of them too and the workshop in athol coming up would be another great chance to see scoots and sleds in action. maybe help you make a choice.

Hey, Mitch, I like this concept of site-built tools and implements. It builds on resourcefulness and retention/refinement of traditional skills and the use of low-cost technologies. I will bring this up with the Program and Events committee as we look to future DAP activities. This could be very cool. 😎

    Tim and Mitch,
A scoot is a great thing as Mitch points out. Almost three years ago I had Jason G. saw some pine runners just under 8′ for a single horse scoot. Pine bunks and I had the irons. Its on the second set of shoes of yellow birch. I busted one of the pine bunks on a job and just dropped a small spruce, more of less squared it off drilled two holes and added my hardware and was back in business. I love it. There are some pictures of it here with the “pick-up” body I can put over the bunks to haul my own already fitted firewood from the wood lot to the wood shed.

The Green Mountain Draft Horse Association had a sled building day last winter. We had a good turn out and built 7 sleds. The iron fronts cost about $50 a piece and the hardware was maybe another $10 and the wood was donated by a member and he sawed it up for us. It was beautiful wood, I wanted to sand and stain mine and make a coffee table out of it, but it was so darn heavy I did not think that would fly in my house. Those that wanted a sled got to take theirs home (for the cost of metal and hardware) and the rest were sold at our auction in May. (I think maybe the one that Rod had for sale on here was one of them). My sled was built for my two minis to pull. It was a great day. Jen has one of the sleds too.

You might also check with John Plowden, in Stowe ME, about sleds. He builds first rate horse equipment. You can find him on the web at plowdenhorselogging.com or on this site as well. If he does not have what you need he can build it.
