What’s Happening in Our Forest is an animated video produced by the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies which outlines the partial story, in superb form, as to what is occurring within our forests of the Rocky Mountain region.

Although I am heavily biased, I consider this video a true work of art and will be sharing it widely.

Also, here is a link to a time lapse recording of a bark beetle infested lodgepole pine stand. Fascinating!

It is important for me to note that although I’m not an advocate for large-scale biomass electrical energy, an appropriately-scaled district heating system that also has electrical generation capability with minimal particulate emissions is a thing of beauty…

    Enjoy!

I’ll add an Idaho 2 cents on what’s happening in the forests here.  One of our Congressmen has proposed some sort of plan to wrest control and management of national forest/public land from the federal govt and put it under the direction of the Governor and his hand-picked panel of “experts”.  The claim is that the state has managed the forest much better than the feds as evidenced by “acres burned” last year.  The state manages a fraction of the acreage that the feds do in this state and the state land has much less remote and a lot easier/closer to access for fighting fires.  But the real rub is when you look at what state managed ground looks like from the air ( a moonscape – probably another reason not much state round burned) vs federal lands.

That is a great little video for nonforestry folks.  I really liked it.  I sent the link to the head of the Massachusetts Forest Alliance encouraging them to make a slightly more New Englandy version.
