Like most people … To make money for me, and my family to live on.Why logging ?
Because it was in big demand, and at that time I wanted something else to do besides drive trucks, and operate heavy equipment, which was getting old to me, and I wanted to do something different before I died.
I studied logging and horses for a long time and in West Virginia we had a big need for someone to take out Good Big Hard Wood Timber in small plots where the big boys could not go in and make money with their large costly equipment.
I was not especially interest in make money for the land owners because that was not why I wanted to go into logging for. But I did know that if I was honest with them, and did not cheat them, that they would receive every penny they were entitled to, and they would make money too.
Hard to find an honest logger in our area back then.
Many would steel logs and short loads.
They will Low grade high dollar timber, and then split the profits form the theft with the log buyers. There are many ways a timber owner can be cheated, lied to and deceived and never know the difference. All they see is $$$ not knowing that they should have gotten more $$$$$$$ for the same timber.
One of my biggest problems was being over weight and trying to keep up with horses moving logs on the ground, and then I came upon the log arch system and that was my answer to my problem, and I studied the different types.
I also looked into using a small 4 wheel drive farm tractor and using a log arch system behind it including using a 4 wheel drive ATV and pulling a log arch behind it also. Even a small 4 wheel drive pick up as a skidder.
There were people who had numerous White Oak, Read Oak, Walnut, and Large Popular trees that could bring good money for High Quality Veneer, and Good Saw Logs.
Some would call me a high grade logger but these people wanted the money now and not down the road some day in the long distant future.
I was not interested in pulp wood or fire wood at that time in my life.
I also wanted to buy an large size stand of good timber for my own self to live on and use as a back up, to log and also use the income from my own timber to help to pay off the property, which many people do.
Some people ( including loggers ) buy these lands and timber them, and then split up the land into small acreage for resale, and some housing developments … making more money.
I also wanted to buy a portable band saw mill to use on my property and on other land owners property to Cut, Skid, Process, and Sell Lumber for me, and the land owners.
Be The Middle Man ! ! !
There are many ways to make money in the timber business.
Remember everything is done on the supply and demand system.
If you have the demand then find your supply.
If you have the supply then find a demand, in what ever you do.What ever you do something.
Can’t, Won’t, Should Have, ETC. they all have the same thing in common.
They Don’t Do Any Thing, And It Does Not Take Much
To Succeed At Doing Nothing ! ! ! 😮
