    Thanks cousin jack

John, no apologies necesary. I’ll clarify myself further, When wagons like those were in use , teamsters used what appeared to be single harness on the 2 horses in the shaves.

I have always been facinated by the different styles/methods of harnessing horses.

Scotland was mostly single for cartage.. even the street horses were usually a single…. Wonder if that meant a Clyde was better than a Shire:D… Scottish farms didnt use wagons at all… 2 wheeled tip carts were the order of the day.. I upset some of the older guys when I turn up with a team in American harness.. not “traditional”.. but a lot more efficient and easier on the horses I recon..

hey john, i noticed jon waterer used belly backers but he had a pioneer powered forecart, and other (american?) farm tools.

it seemed to me that in shafts or pole, the english system used chain for the tugs. but the only thing i have to go on are a few photographs. i’m guessing there was a leather tug in use there, but need you to answer that one. those pictures were 1950-60’s so should be the “modern equipment” of the day.

everyone sent their regards from tunbridge. mitch

Hey Mitch.. Yes Jonathon an me think along the same lines regards harness . The British harness was chain traces with leather covers at the gaskin area {though not always}… I’ll be at Tunbridge next year to meet you all in person:)..
