Well not to turn this thread to serious , but here in southern vermont it is 4 degrees and sleigh rides are starting, 5 today .I used to stop at zero but when a when a mare got frozen lungs ( we think ) we raised the limit to 10 , the mare’s teammate didn’t seem afflicted . the old timers said they worked to 20 below , what does anyone living think ?Karl
December 17, 2009 at 2:01 pm #55948J-LParticipantI work teams in much colder weather than zero. No matter what my cows have to be fed, especially when it gets cold. Over the years we’ve worked them in -20 and colder pretty much every year.
It’s a rare winter when we don’t have some weather colder than that, but I have never frosted anyones lungs.December 17, 2009 at 5:25 pm #55958LostFarmerParticipantJust like you don’t go run a marathon in the cold you don’t really push a team to where they are roaring in that cold. But I have hooked up at MUCH colder than 0 an closer to -20 many times a year. Hard to start a tractor at that cold but the horses haven’t failed me yet. LF
December 17, 2009 at 7:39 pm #55950CharlyBonifazMemberare you talking Fahrenheit? 😮
December 17, 2009 at 8:56 pm #55959LostFarmerParticipantYes, that would be Fahrenheit. And where J-L is the wind does blow most of the winter. We are at 6600 feet elevation and Wes a little higher. Been -30 F already once this winter and it isn’t even officially winter yet. 😡
Cold enough that is kiss from your mother in law is warmer. :p
December 18, 2009 at 2:19 am #55954blue80ParticipantWhen we bought our place in N. Wyoming, the seller told us we were in the “banana belt” of Wyoming. Apparently the wind doesn’t blow as much, it’s not quite as cold as long, not huge amounts of snow etc. etc.
I guess he was right, as we’ve only been down to -25 so far.First day above freezing today in two weeks, so we poured 65 yds of concrete. but now have to check the job at midnight and 3 am to make sure the heaters work and the possible wind doesn’t blow the tarps off….
The tradeoff, is no mud to deal with on a daily basis.Thank God for Carharts!
