Ok people.. I’m puting my 5yr old Clyde mare to the horse in April.. What would you consider a safe workload for her during pregnancy. I obviously know the heavy drags are out but what about plows and mowers ? Chain work or pole ?? thanks in advance coz I know I’ll get sound advice,

Thanks Joel.. We dont exactly work them hard anyway.. I’ll take your advice and make our hay and do a bit of harrowing and some wagon work.

Amish told me they’d rather have a foal drop in the plow furrow than in the pasture, I took that to mean a fit, not heavy mare is healthiest for foaling and milk production.

Same with cows. A fat, soft cow will have a far greater chance of calving problems … in fact a far greated problem even being settled than a leaner, more muscular one. I suspect this is true with all females, including those of our species. NOT that I am comparing women to cows or mares! (I’ve made THAT mistake before and it isn’t taken too kindly :D)

I suppose this fit idea gives some merit to the phrase, “survival of the fittest.”

This is a good discussion topic as I want to breed Dottie this year and still keep her working. I’m looking forward to more input and opinions.
