we have four kids(9,11,12,14)who all work with the ponies.my 11 old son and 12 daughter are the real horsey ones but they all can ride and drive the ponies.our 9 year old son wants to get bigger and stronger than the other kids so is always using he ponies to do chores his big brothers can’t do.makes the little guy feel big.my 11 year old son(jr)broke his two welsh (11.2hand)mares ages 3 and 5 to drive this winter and are in the process of teaming them up.we have a pair of 12 hand mares on deck for training behind them with a hackney gelding and a poa mare to round them out.jr breaks them all to ride first them puts them right into harness.bought two blue nylon harnesses off ebay for training and have a team collar set for when they are ready.they are already traffic safe with over 100miles logged in last season on our local roads in saddle, so driving down the roads works well.i was referred to the site by george from does’ leap.hi george.all the work with the ponies are done by the kids with only alittle help from me when needed.i do grab onto some lines every now and then. jr headed out to his first boy scout camping trip tonight.this morning he told me he had to bring fire wood for the trip so i sent him 1/4 mile out back with a pony, a harness ,and a jet sled(ice fishing sled) to fetch the wood i cut up for him.his mare of choice is his 3 year old welsh/hackney cross he raise since birth(her mother was his first pony and she died year and a half ago)that little mare will do anything he askes i swear!!the wood got heavy up the long hill but she made 4 trips in and out.job done.we got into ponies for the kids and its always been about them.i m sure as they grow bigger so will the ponies.love the site there is tons of great info hear!

    Welcome Rob and Family,

I miss Washington County (NY), I used to live in Easton and started my adventures there as an AI tech, Hebron was one of my favorite places to drive through and I used to stop at the General Store in Hebron for refreshments after tackling the big herd down the Black Creek Road. We look forward to you joining us here and hope to see you at some events with your herd 🙂

Hey Rob, glad you made it on the site. I was just telling my daughter about how your son trains his ponies. What a great thing. How about some pictures when you get a chance?

thats the family down at log bay on lake george.we hiked 3miles to have dinner on the eastern shores for sunset.ponies packed drinks and pork tenderlion and corn on the cob(along with all the cooking stuff).

those are great pictures, it doesnt look like that boy is gonna get thrown, in a couple years he will be riding bareback broncs over at double m. I was about his age when I broke my first pony to drive, it seems harder for me now that it did then for some reason…

    nice work

junior is a wonder with the animals.my goal is to let him work as many wrank horses as i can get. anybody can work/ride a dead broke horse, but when you can work any horse(wrank or broke)you are a true horseman.he is well on his way.he wishes to ride the bulls someday.they have schools out west but they are geared towards 13-14 year old kids so he just has to wait.

i had to dig deep for these pics
that horse was bought at unadilla horse auction .she was fresh off a farm, underweight and had collar sores.paid $345,just over what the meat buyers used to pay.Junior was 5years old then.no bit or saddle.when Junior kept getting into trouble in school i sold her at a local auction .within a month he had student of the month and got his first pony.

thats great. The first horse I called mine I bought with money from picking up cans off the side of the road, he was tied to a dog house and my dad loaded him into the back of a toyota pickup truck for us to take home, still one of the best horses I ever had. It looks like that little guy is gonna be one of the horseman that is needed in our future.
