June 17, 2008 at 3:51 am #46852Neil DimmockParticipantHi, the collars unbuckle so it make no difference if they have horns or not.
June 20, 2008 at 9:07 pm #46848Rob FLoryParticipantHi Neil,
I enjoyed the photos a lot. Have you found any old collars around your area? This is pretty much yoke country out here, but I am still intrigued by collars.Rob Flory

“My old cuz’n, born 1880’s, drove freight with steers from the alabama hills across the gumbo creek bottoms…. about 40-some miles…took all day one day there,…the same back…had lotsa’ adventures….haul’n necessaries….lotsa’ bulk sugar…they’d mix with corn,…for some reason,…clouded now???….used yokes…& 6-ups…if i recollect…but ol’ cuz quit his good job…when the Rich White Folk put him with mules….they’d sull pull’n deep mud…but steers would just bear down & pull…..Dad & Grand-dad work steers some…they’s broke pretty good 1st…cause Dad & his Bros. would run ’em thru a creek wash, grab ’em by the tail, for lack of shoulder grips on ’em & out a-straddle’n saplins’ they’d go….it works…but I didn’t get that info Google’n………June 21, 2008 at 12:10 am #46854Neil DimmockParticipantWell I have searched and searched and all I found out west was this one with a yoke it was taken at Fort Walsh, is a ox train from Fort Benton, over 100 photos and this it!! so I would say That the yoke was not to popular!!No traslation needed this time!!:D

July 9, 2008 at 2:18 pm #46847TinaYParticipantI like the idea of collars simply because I’m a small gal and would have trouble lifting a yoke! 😮
July 19, 2008 at 5:24 am #46861JamiFLParticipantI’m a newbie here so please forgive me if I do something wrong. I don’t own any oxen nor am I physically able to work them even if I could have some. I’m just trying to expand my knowledge of old time techniques. I grew up on a 270 acre dairy/racehorse farm in western NY State that was in the family from about 1760 to 2005. We didn’t buy our first tractor until 1964. Everything we did in my really young days was by draft horse.
Has any research been done to see what type of collar/yoke/harness combination would allow a farmer to get the maximum amount of power from his oxen and also be the best for the animals too? I’d hypothesize that a collar would be better just based on a few characteristics: Lighter; Fits better (more ergonomic); Wouldn’t impede breathing.
Just curious.

I guess you will have to try it your self!
