    DAP regulars, Kristan Doolan and George Van Vlaanderen, recently received a 2009 Vermont Sustainable Farm of the Year Award. Their decision to replace some of the tractor tasks on farm with draft animal power was sited as one of the reasons that they were selected. Congratulations!

    Congrats to Kristan and George.
    We are planning to do the same move – the steers are big enough. Tractor is nice in some situations(for now) but too noisy, smelly, etc.
    The steers will be more companionable, efficient – and -the fertilise as they go.

    congratulations kristan and george. you must be proud and happy to get your award. the fact that vermont gives a sustainable farm award is good news and should be celebrated. i’m happy for you both, and all the rest of us too.

    Major congratulations to you both . I think its great that your state supports sustainability in this way.. What other incentives do you guys have over there ?? Is it a “state” thing or is there a national award to. ? We have nothing that suports draft animal power in the agricultural sector.. Or at least I dont know of anything, mabey some of my fellow brits could chip in here !

    Congratulations to George and Kristan indeed.

    What a great step to have the animal powered component of your work included in the validation of sustainability. Congrats to the state of Vermont for that official recognition, puts the Green Mtn. State ahead of all others in that honest assessment of power for the farm.

    Keep up your good work. Now that you have gained this wonderful recognition you may be watched closely for continuing success. Thanks for setting this great example.

    Boy, you two have certainly come a long way to acheive your goals! From working off-farm to now full time on the farm and all you’ve accomplished with the horses over the past 2 years….very inspiring! Congratulations!

    Congratulations! Way to set the bar high and show that sustainable is more than just no till and IPM practices, you show that it can be taken much further. I hope other states begin to take VT’s lead. NY has Dairies of Distinction, maybe we can work on Sustainable Farms of Distinction. Good Job!

    Thanks to all for your kind words. We were pleasantly surprised and honored by this accolade. I am happy that they cited our horses as a factor in the award as they have brought us great joy and made our farm better.
