Maybe I’m imagining it but my 10 y.o. Beta lines seem stiffer than they once were. Particularly in a couple spots.
Does anyone know if here are different grades of Beta? Anyone ever noticed age related degradation?
Thanks,
MarkFebruary 3, 2011 at 1:54 am #65426IraParticipantI’ve had 2 sets. They tend to crack and then pieces of the coating fall off.
February 3, 2011 at 10:07 pm #65431jacParticipantYes thats the same with mine. it has started to crack at the coupling line hole on the long line and these are 10ish as well so mabey there is an age related “terminator gene” built in to this man made stuff:D…

February 4, 2011 at 12:58 pm #65429mitchmaineParticipantno one here for leather lines?? my harness is a hodgepodge of bio-beta-nylon. i’ve changed over for all the reasons. cheap, light and so on. but i couldn’t stand the lines. i’ve had this one set of team lines for ever and they came used and look it. i just like the feel of leather lines in my hands.
February 4, 2011 at 1:39 pm #65427IraParticipantI went with beta cuz of the cost. Tried nylon but you can’t feel the horses mouth the way you can with leather lines. Beta also allows you to feel the horses mouths.
February 4, 2011 at 1:57 pm #65422MarshallParticipantMitchmaine, I am with you. Leather all the way. I even use leather harnesses, Mostly because I picked them up cheap and I only have to lift them on to haflingers.

I thought I would never like them, and planned on switching back and forth, but have been using this set ever since, going on 10 years. There are a few places where the coating has been stripped off, from chewing, or rubbing, but nothing serious. I like them and think they hold up really well, but if they don’t I have the leather to fall back on…..

February 5, 2011 at 6:04 am #65430RoscoeParticipantI like the Beta lines because they hafe no seam, where they hang up on on other harness parts, especially when you drive 4 up.
February 5, 2011 at 12:06 pm #65424Does’ LeapParticipantI love my beta lines. I bought 3/4″ lines and they are softer and more supple than leather. I have a newish set of leather lines that I haven’t used since I got the beta. Everything else on my harness is leather.

February 6, 2011 at 5:42 am #65432MacParticipantI personally have, much to the chagrin of my old man, beta lines 25 feet long. I bought them new this year and don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner. (For the reason for the length, see my post regarding dogs and iron-tired wagons) Now, you really don’t want me to get started on harness. Mine is leather… and bio… and some nylon… and a little bit of baling wire thrown in for good measure. But hey, it works!
MacFebruary 7, 2011 at 5:12 pm #65425greyParticipantI once had occasion to borrow someone else’s set of thin, shiny biothane lines and I did not like them. I thought they felt floppy and dead in the hand, similar to a plain nylon strap. No body to them and I had a harder time maintaining contact with the horse’s mouth. I also didn’t like how slippery they were, with that gloss finish.
I have some thicker, textured, matte beta biothane lines that I love. They are similar in width, thickness and heft to my leather lines. Unlike my leather lines, I can drop them in a bucket of bleach when they get scummy. They also do not get slick when wet, like my leather lines do.
