It has been a crazy fall here what with tropical storm cleanup and the wet weather that followed, the 50 ton of wood ash could not be delivered till yesterday AM. They recommend spreading it with manure . so i had not spread at all,
not knowing how far my stockpile would go. Well i started yesterday PM, light north wind forced me to spread into the
breeze usual procedure , the stuff is mighty fine .

A great afternoon was had , the trio were terrific ,2 belgian mares and a big black perc gelding in the middle . They
just walk easy with my 206 New Idea ground drive spreader, set on 3/4 speed. Went at it again today nothin could be finer . Oh one mare decided to take her head stall off on the hitch rail and broke it , luck had a piece of baling twine lend, I borrowed it .
Looks like the same weather for a few days , so I guess we’ll just keep on keeping on. Some times things just work out in spite
of the weather and other things

John – must be spreadin’ in the snow. We’re in that mode now and I assume you are too.

Karl – where are you getting 50T of wood ash?

The ash comes from wood fired power plants around New England, I think they claim there are 5 or 6 .I can’t remember the price
now its been so long since I ordered it , but it seemed reasonable compared to chemical,of course it won’t work like petro either but I haven’t used any of that for a few years. Resource Management inc. is the distributor ,they have a web site .
Yeah we have had snow 10″ ,it;s gone for now ,guess we have a window till wednesday at least .
Photos ,I ‘ll try again ,with the old forum I never managed to post a one ,technically challenged it is
    probably easier now??

Geoff, we’ve got just a sprinkle of snow now… and it’s supposed to get up into the 40’s next week. Hopefully the significant snow will hold off for another month…we usually start feeding cows Thanksgiving weekend or later… and we’re keeping our fingers crossed for that again this year, as we had 2 fields that we never could get on to cut hay.
Karl, are you running shaves or a pole and offset on the 3 abreast?

    Geoff,

Where do you get the wood ash from? How much is the application rate or do you mix it with the manure?

Ed, the ash comes from Resource Management inc Holderness NH. They said 3 ton to the acre and mix with manure ,easier to spread and easier on the equipment.

John, I use a double pole system with a triple yoke, found the yoke years age in wapole nh at Allen Smith’s Harness shop, works great everybody helps pull and hold back. Good luck stretching the grazing season out , our grass is still green green though we have had 10 or more hard frosts . Got a neighbor who just called they have 6 acres of beautiful 2/nd cutting they won’t get did I want it ?
Spread manure or make more hay ?

Here the used fly ash from the power plant as ground cover in front of the feedbunks when I was at the university. That stuff packed down like pavement and really helped with the mud and foot rot/scald issues.

Well, nuts! Guess we waited a bit long to start spreading manure…. woke up to 16″ of new snow this morning and it’s been snowing off and on all day. TV says we’re in for another 3″ to a foot tonight…. looks like manure is going on in the spring.

Hay John isn’t that the great thing about pencil and paper ,sorta like the snow pooof came, poof the manure is a spring job.
We have been having great manure spreading weather 50s + days and high 20s at nite. We got the 50 ton spread and trying go on to the next ,but not sure when, poof, it will become a spring job. Looks like a couple rainy days coming ,I’m not so keen on working in the rain as I was 10 years ago . Karl
