    DAPNet is constructing then raffling off a log scoot at the Athol Logging workshop on December 9th. I have all the hardware with the exception of the nose and rear ring irons for the pole. If anyone has a source or could spare them from your pile of treasures DAPNet would be very appreciative.

    If Carl’s mining expedition comes up short you can buy rings at Berrybrook Ox Supply. They aren’t cheap.

    I called Berry Brook last year and Tim said they did not have any irons.

    I found the irons from an old set of bobsleds rusting away out in the woods a while ago. I think there was some stake pockets with small rings on them for binding the load that were still good. I’ll go back out and look at them. But it will be at least a week before I can get back there, so keep looking in the mean time.

    Hey Ed:

    Do you have a forge and anvil? If so, I don’t think it would be too bad to fabricate them. The ring under the bunk is made out of 3/4″ round stock and the front ring is only 1/2″. If you come up short, I can take some measurements.

    I have a few….. what diameters are you interested in? …. And how do you intend to attach them to the chains, hammer locks, clevis, weld??? I haven’t had time to dig very deep, so my stores are not abundant, but I should be able to part with two…..

    Old truck springs can be cut, heated and welded to the needed diameter.

    The one I have is 5 ¼ “on the nose ring and 4” on the rear. The pole can be cut to fit whatever we come up with and can be supplied by the winner of the raffle.
    I attached the nose ring to the chain with d-rings. The rear was attached with an eye bolt and suspended from the rear cross bunk. I have 5/16” chain for the scoot and a couple of cold links that can be welded.
    I do not have a forge or anvil, but if I have to could heat them with a rosebud and bend them around a piece of well casing or something.
    I wonder if it would be best to simply supply the hardware then let whoever wins the scoot attach it so it will suite their needs.

    If Carl’s hardware cache doesn’t pan out for you, why not make squares instead of rings? Irregardless of whether you are making a pole from sapling (round) or purchasing one (square) you should be able to shape your pole to fit the square under the bunk, still using the eye bolt to secure it. The nose ring/square is even more forgiving, you just want some play around your pole and a square should serve nicely. It would be relatively quick to fabricate – 8 cuts and 8 welds. This would be easier than the rosebud option or perhaps even the forge for that matter.
