0May 2nd Sugarbush & Kinney’s Sugarhouse
Join the Maine Forest Service and the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association’s (MOFGA) Low Impact Forestry Project for a full day of presentations and site visits highlighting the silviculture and business of managing for maple syrup. Foresters, industry professionals, and sugarbush experts will present information about disease and pest control, managing your stand for maple, the business of sugaring, and innovative equipment. A full half of the day will be spent in the field comparing two very different sugarbushes in the area. MOFGA has a small stand that has been thinned, but has not been tapped. In contrast, Kinney’s Sugarhouse covers roughly 185 acres, and has been a commercial operation for eight years. We will tour the Kinney’s sugarhouse and woods, and will have a chance to discuss the business and equipment, as well as the silviculture and management.
For registration information, and questions, please contact Kevin Doran of the Maine Forest Service at kevin.doran@maine.gov. Students should arrive at MOFGA’s campus in Unity, ME by 8a.m. Coffee and baked goods will be available throughout the morning, but students should bring their own lunch. We will be carpooling from MOFGA to the field sites.
