I decided to put up a I-beam/chain hoist in my shop. I built the barn/shop a few years back and should have done this in the construction process but I was to overwhelmed at the time wanting to “get ‘er done.”
I purchased a 12″x20′ i-beam for $325 and spent another $150 on a 2 ton chain hoist and chain hoist trolley. The i-beam is supported by 6″x6 spruce posts. The i-beam weighs around 650 lbs. With 4 people, 2 sets of block and tackles, staging and lots of figuring and cussin’ we here able to get it up 11′ on top of the posts.
The set-up works slick. The hoist moves smoothly along the i-beam. I can now unload items off my truck into the shop and easily work on farm equipment such as rakes, tedders, etc.
Here are some pictures:

I run into this quite a bit retrofitting steel beams into homes/shops during renovations. Safe and easy is the name of the game.

I assume it is rated for the 4,000 lbs?
