Hi Folk,
Does anybody have 6-12 sap spigots to loan or sell? Or, where is the best place to buy pails and equipment. This’ll e my first year gathering. I’ve a few trees on the new property and a few on another property that I might try to tap. Right now I only have 6 buckets, but would be interested in buying a few more if somebody’s got spares gathering dust. I definitely need spigots though, and will shop commercially if no one here has any. Here’s hoping for a good run,
JayMarch 1, 2015 at 9:58 am #85076Mark CowdreyParticipantJay, For a handful of anything sugaring-wise I would call Bascom’s & have them mail it. I would get the 5/16 tree saver spouts (spout or spile, not spigot) https://www.bascommaple.com/item/sphlats/spout_bucket/. If your buckets have small hanging holes in them that are made for the hooks on the bigger 7/16 spouts, just ream them out w a drill. 7/16 spouts should all be in the recycling, IMO.
Buckets are a different question. Bascom’s has them but fairly pricey. Check Craigslist and http://mapletrader.com/traderclassifieds/
When looking at buckets I stay away from anything that has been painted, and check inside for rust.
At least w this season you are not yet in a BA rush.
Good luck.

No rush here, and no good understanding of VOcab either.
Maybe I’ll come see you sugar house in operation?March 1, 2015 at 11:05 am #85080Mark CowdreyParticipantSure, happy to have the company. Hope to be up and running in a couple weeks.

Mark did not warn you that Maple is a highly addictive habit, both its production and consumption. Sam wants you to know that it is as bad, if not worse than the horse habit.
Maple On!

I am in no hurry to tap maybe next week if weather goes as predicted still cold today

still need to set up
BillMarch 5, 2015 at 11:45 am #85123LongViewFarmParticipantI got the Leader Ball Valve spouts, and cut off the bottom to make it easier to hang he bucket. The ones Bascoms gave me had a 90 degree bend and about 1″ of plastic after for hooking to tubing. Bonus- I found 5 bucket spouts in one of the buckets in the basement. I haven’t installed them yet. I’m scrounging for a bigger collection tub now, and reshoeing the sap sled I’ve had for a few years. It’s very old and finally being put back to its original use.
What time were you at Bascom’s Bill? I was there around 3pm.

March 6, 2015 at 6:35 am #85132Carl RussellModeratorLook out Jay, the disease has just set in. When in twenty years you wonder where all your spare time and cash has gone, you can remember this day….
I pushed open some trails in our bush on Wednesday. I plan on using them to cut firewood through the rest of this winter, but also wanted to have the option of hanging a few hundred buckets. We could not upgrade our evaporator last fall, so I am thinking about selling sap to our neighbor in exchange for some syrup. We will boil some too on the little arch.
Snow was soft and sticky and piled in front of the crawler. First time all winter that the snow was not corny and mealy. It all froze by yesterday, and now the banks along the trails are restrictive. In fact the horses were challenged to work easily within those constraints. When I broke out to make a new loop, the snow was deep, but in some ways easier to travel in. I also noticed that the snow is almost a foot deeper at 1300’feet in the sugar bush than it is in the woods at 1000 feet where I have been working in the plantations near the house.
Lots of excitement around here because temps are forecast above freezing next week. Things still seem a little solid for me to get to bunched up over. I am resolved to not spend a lot of money or time I don’t have on sugaring, so that it remains an optional enterprise for us. I may never make much money at it, but I hope to make it a rewarding and effective aspect of our land use.
Good luck, Carl
March 8, 2015 at 7:00 am #85145Donn HewesKeymasterThree Taps set! Snow shoeing in three feet of snow. We have been breaking a trail to drag fire wood for a week. Pretty rough but we did start to move a little wood. next time the sun comes out I will take a picture of the mares up to thier bellies in snow. I pulled my snow plow into two pieces; (it severed me well, and originally came from all the twisted lumber from a barn project) I believe that indicates the end of winter! The next snow plow is on the drawing board. All wood again, nofore cart this time I hope. With a 60 degree nose I will be able to pull it from different angles to get different widths. Plus one long side, one short side and a built-in wing. All ready by Dec 2015!
March 8, 2015 at 9:22 am #85147LongViewFarmParticipantWell,
I’ve got 11 buckets out, 10 on ball valve spouts and one on a bucket spout. I put the first few out last Weds (it was warm) and when I looked today there was some frozen in each bucket.March 8, 2015 at 6:11 pm #85150dominiquer60ModeratorYou are on your way Jay, keep it sane and grow slowly.
Sam tapped one bush yesterday, will start on the other tonight and hopefully finish it tomorrow.
Spring must be coming, I am off to body clip some show horses tomorrow, at least it is some seed money 🙂
