The vet made the trip out to the farm a couple days ago to look at Annie. It turns out its a wonderful cocktail of both Ringworm and lice. With the relatively warm weather, I gave her a couple betadine baths and then applied the athletes foot cream to the bald patches (Thanks Jay). I’m a bit worried about clipping her back end and belly with the cold weather still to come. Any thoughts concerning blanketing a horse that has already put on a winter coat?
Thanks for the help. I’m pretty worried about it spreading as she has started to scratch her neck and bite at the pits of her front legs. I feel like its going to be a long hard battle. The cold makes it pretty difficult to treat effectively.
Goranson FarmParticipantI know horses aren’t milking cows but I had a bit of trouble with grass tetany induced milk fever when I tried grazing my families cover crop of winter rye with my small herd of milkers. Winter Rye is low in magnesium which is required for a cow to metabolize calcium. This was even with a mineral supplement in my Jerseys grain and hay. Grazing rye also caused this same cows milk to smell exactly like rotting fish. Its mind blowing how drastic an impact the diet of an animal has on the flavor of the milk they produce.
Goranson FarmParticipantI would love to, but I’m afraid by the time you start picking buckets I will be back in school. We do about 50-60 taps at Bennington College. Its not much, but on top of a full college workload it makes for quite a hectic time. Collecting with Mitch and his team was about the most fun I have ever had collecting sap. Nothing would make me happier than to get out in the woods with some horses. Thanks for giving a shout out.
I’m free now until the middle of February.
Goranson FarmParticipantBrad,
I think I’m going to be spending the winter down in southern VT. Thanks for getting back to me. I’m sure I’ll have some questions to bounce off folks when I finally get out in the woods this December. Right now I have to resign myself to the world of Chem and Animal phys. See you in Barton.

Goranson FarmParticipantHi Brad,
sorry for not getting back to you sooner. School is really starting to pick up and I have very little free time. I’m going to have a moment this weekend to visit one of the potential logging sites here in Bennington. If it looks moderately flat I may try to forge out on my own. How to approach the insurance issue is a huge question mark for me at the moment as well as finding a descent trailer for less then 500 dollars. Are you going to be attending the Draft Animal Power Field Day the end of the month?
I’ll stay in touch. I wont know until this Sunday what my game plan may be.
Goranson FarmParticipantI would love to see those designs. Any way you could attach it as a pdf?
Goranson FarmParticipantHas the team been sold?
