Hi Roy, looks like you’re into doing just about what we are too. I’ve been pulling it together in bits and pieces since 1986. I think animal power has really good value on the small diversified enterprise.

    Welcome, Carl

The simple math is if you start them in a 4″, and they grow to an 11″m then you will need 7 yokes. The reality is that when they are small, and growing fast, unless you are working them really hard you can keep a yoke a little longer by using the next sized bows. In this part of the country (world) there are many people who often have a yoke they aren’t using, so I have borrowed some at different times.

Well, just remember this site caters to “progressive thought” so views like these may not be popular. Nothing wrong with having a few curmudgeons around to rein in this “hope and change” crap.

Having developed the site, I am catering to no one type, trying to include all, but I believe the only thoughts to have are progressive, no point in having a brain if you don’t work it, but that in no way means progressive politics. I am extremely conservative in that I believe that the social instincts that humans have trump any program, or policy that any artificial governing body can come up with, and I am extremely liberal in how I allow others to understand their own life experience and choose to participate. I can embrace all points of view, but only follow my own.

I really want to host a site that can cater to whatever discussions people want to have, but if folks can’t make their points without having to be picking apart, or blaming another for their own personal or perceived positions, I’m going to have to seriously rethink this. I know that there are people in the wings (several hundred, possibly) who are questioning whether they want to get into any discussion here for fear they will be subjected to this.

Hey ya know I saw an article in SFJ a few years back about a kid that put a harness on a rooster. No foolin’.

Thanks Erika, I made sure to include “Community” events in the forum title.

Rick, I like your idea, and from my experience it is not just tree huggers. I have spent most of my twenty some odd years working with landowners who invest themselves in their own woodland operations, cutting wood, some timber harvesting, trail building etc. They are really more interesting than the ones who want all their decisions made for them, and they tend to understand the value of your service.

I have been contacted recently by several young foresters looking to expand their skills with draft animals, or who want to develop consultancies around animal powered forestry, and as I am more and more busy at home, I am trying to figure out how to pass along the forest management torch so that we can grow a crop of forest professionals who either want to work with horses themselves, or who understand how to manage land with animal power.

I know that our territories don’t really overlap, but maybe there is a way that we can work together to enhance the network within our region.

All of the rights that we hold dear, can, and will, be taken advantage of by ne’r-do-wells.

Once you have to fight for unalienable rights, you’ve got an uphill battle.

I do keep my horses shod throughout the entire year, but I will work them barefoot, depending on how schedule works out sometimes.

The main thing that I would say about the resting thing, is that they should get used to being stopped before they need it. If you work them until they are so tired that they hesitate, or begin to look overlabored, then watch them, and you will see the signs to look for. The point is that you will not want to be looking for those signs, but learn to see how they progress toward that point where they are losing energy, then keep their effort at a level that they seem to be able to maintain.

Although we have not had any major blow-ups on DAP for a while, there seems to be fairly regular expressions of intolerance, and discomfort.

We are getting over 10 thousand visits per month, from around the world.

If you are trying to protect yourself from, or rid yourself of, people who have different views than you, this is not the place to come.

PLEASE remember that even though personal expressions of beliefs, values, and frustrations do help us to know who you are, they can also make other people very uncomfortable.

If the purpose of your comments ARE to make people uncomfortable, then don’t make them.

    Thank you, Carl
