The wet weather seems to have a direct correlation to the flakiness of my horns as well, it has been dry for a little while and they seem to have at least stayed the same instead of getting worse. I was using hoof dressing on mine but have cut back to using it every once in a while and only when dry, the combo of wet and hoof dressing seemed to make the horns even worse.

I am for doing this workshop as well. I think that this forum doesn’t work for all of our board members and want to remind everyone that as poor as it is, the free conference call line is available for all committees to use at anytime, it seems to work better/clearer the less people there are using it. I recommend trying to use this resource for any committee that is having trouble with participation in the future, DAP is not for everyone at all times of the year.

I finally got my 7″ yoke in progress to the point where I could use it. I think that more wood could come off, but will wait for some help from someone more experienced at these things. For now it is certainly an improvement over the 6″.

They appear more comfortable and move out and together better, so I consider that a thumbs up from them. I will take some pics and post as soon as life slows down enough to learn how to use this forum:)

After using the Ivermectin the dandruff got worse. A friend recommended a 1:2 vinegar to water ratio in a spray bottle, and if that didn’t work to use some kind of powder. Happy to report that the dandruff is almost all gone now and I only had to use vinegar.

Fecal showed all sorts of wildlife in their guts again. Ivermectin followed by a couple rounds of safeguard, while using Corid for a while was the docs orders. They are growing nicely again, even my slow steer is getting to the point that I may cut back on the feed a little.

A team stopping when you fall because you are the leading animal makes sense to me. I have had this happen before and they stop and turn to look at me trying to get up. But I also have other experiences that convince me of the same. This fall when I was tinkering around with driving my team from behind, I discovered that my team doesn’t really know what whoa means, they see whoa the body language, but not whoa the word. From behind they certainly needed help from the lines to stop, not a lot, but with out seeing me stop, it was just another word to them. After some practice they did eventually stop by voice and no lines, just something I will have to keep reinforcing I guess.

Then a couple weeks ago I was changing up our routine a bit by calling them to me from 20′-30′ away. I taught my dog to stop on command in the middle of a come (it has been handy when he is on the wrong side of the road and a car is coming), so I thought I would teach the team the same. Sure enough they were happy to come up to me and stop and stand with me without encouragement to whoa, but when I asked them to whoa part way, it didn’t click right away. It took a couple tries but they got it fairly quick, but I am still convinced it is my body that they are listening to and not so much my voice command in this case.

I have been a horse person for a good portion of my life, I rode, drove and participated in a therapeutic riding program. I like horses, and I like working horses even more:) At the 2008 NEAPFD I saw a couple of the calf training workshops and had the opportunity to work with some calves the following year. I am hooked on cattle now, but certainly have not lost my appreciation for horses.

I think Robert is on to something about it “being about the human.” There things that I expect from all species I deal with, but there are certain things that I would expect different when dealing with horse, ox, dog or person respectfully, and it is a matter of adapting to each. Some of us are more fitted to working a certain type of animal and others may have a better ability to switch freely between any of them. I haven’t really met an animal that I didn’t like, but I have met many whos training and care I just don’t agree with, and pity the situation such an animal is in (especially the show horses that I deal with). All in all, if the shoe fits wear it, some people just have multiple pairs of shoes to choose from.

I don’t know much about Olivers, but I love the highly adjustable bridle. Nice looking plow.

    I like your ideas Ethan,

Taking money off seems like a better approach and stating any fees as what you will pay if you are not a member seems like a better spin. It makes it seem like members are being rewarded instead of non-members being punished, the numbers are the same but more inviting to potential members, hopefully.

It sounded like this guy has staff or at least a cook and would need some income for the farm school to pay these people. Potlucks work well when everyone comes right from home, but over the course of the weekend, we are often caught up with the work at had and don’t find the time or kitchen space to be able to handle a dish to pass too. If we end up needing insurance, we will certainly need to collect some money to makeup for that.

Even if this is a logging weekend, if it costs to put the event on, then participants should pay enough to make ends meet. There was a reasonable weekend fee plus meals at the Gathering at Jay’s. I was a teamster there and didn’t grumble a bit about driving 2 hours to get there, paying a registration fee or meals, I am certain that I got more out of it than what I paid, come on those meals alone:)!

It sounds like we need to have a coordinator from the Event Committee and start finding out what legal/insurance protection we and/or Bradley need, what staff needs there are and if we need to charge something or not.

    Lets get the ball rolling!

    Erika

If we are collecting registration (Baileys collected their own) how is it divided, are we just getting the memberships? Also who has the insurance for this event? If something goes wrong, who does it fall back on?

Just to clarify, this is not an add for myself, but for a really good person that doesn’t have many connections outside of her hometown, she also doesn’t email.

Having farmed with her myself, she is a hard worker and is the type of person that you can trust your farm to while you take off on vacation for a couple weeks.

I think that putting in the newsletter will help generate people interested in coming. If he figures that he needs a certain amount to cover costs we can publish a registration deadline and and that there is a minimum number of people required or the event will not be held. We to this for our vegetable farm tours around here, if only 3 are going to show, we cancel the tour, we aim for 10 otherwise the farmer rushes around cleaning up at the last minute for nothing.

Otherwise we have most of it pieced together and are working on editing and gathering a little more info. Hopefully Jean will be sending an almost complete version out to the committee to edit/review shortly.

    Ed,
Have you made contact with Bradley? The newsletter is starting to come together and if we at least had a date we could promote it there, otherwise it can certainly make a couple eNews and DAP, perhaps a postcard invite as well?
