Crossbow works, but it has also been mentioned on this site that cutting the roses and painting the stump directly with herbicide is effective and very exact use of a chemical.
Has anyone here tried using hogs to combat multiflora?
dominiquer60ModeratorAnother great video Tim, thanks for sharing!
We attempted our first hangup at the DAPNet Annual Gathering. Just a small tree that fell in the crotch of another. My Abe And Will gave their best and got the butt end a few feet off the ground before it pulled them backwards. A very good effort on their part, but the crotch of the hangup had wedged into the standing tree. We gave them a nice easy stick to pull right after to keep their confidence up and they continued throughout the rest of the morning giving it their best. It was nice to have such a situation to work them in with many knowledgeable people at hand and real work to accomplish.

dominiquer60ModeratorJean may have a proposal from him, I mentioned in his post that anyone interested in hosting an event should contact Jean with information.

Ben has his hands full with these Dexters, but they get the job done for him. Oxen can get to the point where they are happy to stand untied while you wander off, go out of sight, move a vehicle in the yard, etc. They are what you make of them.
dominiquer60ModeratorWelcome Marie!
Enjoy looking through our old posts and feel free to ask questions or start new post of your own. We have a great community of helpful teamsters including retired and aspiring teamsters. We look forward to learning about you and your farm.
Warm Wishes,
dominiquer60ModeratorEthan You missed the discussion at the meeting about the paper copy.
Basically there are some members that don’t use computers that should get the paper copy, and there are some that prefer the paper copy (it seems more special than an email) and we have printed more for promotional material than we have mailed to members.
The idea was brought up at some point that it should be an option for members to get an electronic or hardcopy of the newsletter. I am all for this, but the real problem has been that the newsletter makes a great promotional give away. It would be great to have a brochure to give out, but the newsletter is something that is less likely to be tossed in the trash.
Getting some equipment dealers or distributors, like Bluestar, to advertise would be great, but not all of them have email addresses either.
As wonderful as online communication can be, it is not for everyone, so while reaching out to members, potential members and advertisers it is important to remember not everyone is electronically connected.
I got an email from Sean518 today offering to help….
I sent you a PM on DAP.com yesterday, I’m sean518 on there. I saw the
committee needs post and I just wanted to volunteer for any print graphic
design needs you might have. I’ve been designing professionally for about
twelve years now. I’m not interested in design websites, that’s not my
thing. But if you ever need flyers or newsletters or anything like that,
just let me know and I’ll see what I can do.It would be nice to have a brochure to pass out or to leave at events/feedstores/etc, that is less expensive to produce than the newsletter. We could have a downloadable file on both websites so that people can print some off and use them at the events that we go to. Maybe this would be a good task for Sean?
dominiquer60ModeratorA friend of mine from NY was a Woofer in Peru for a couple winters, he had a great time and ended up meeting another Woofer from MN while they were in Peru. They are now farming partners here in NY finishing up their third successful season together and prepping for a fourth. I think the Woofer program does a good job at providing connections for those looking for a first hand experience with agriculture and provides the farmers with an extra hand or two that they can hopefully inspire.
Reminds me of someone that I apprenticed with, he and his wife met in Bolivia, they were both in the Peace corps working on projects at the time.
I think both are good but different programs.
dominiquer60ModeratorI think some of it was what Carl and Lisa set up initially just to have some categories to work with. I am sure we can tweak things to meet our current needs better. I like the idea of having a general and a category for each committee to start with, perhaps each committee can be broken into the subcommittees as well?
dominiquer60Moderatordidn’t know where to put this..
A couple of people tried to pm me today, I just emptied my mailbox, so you can try again or just email me at marczake@hotmail.com.
Thanks,
dominiquer60ModeratorHowie’s team ended up being listed in his early September auction.
dominiquer60ModeratorEd and I wrote the Gathering article and Jay read it with approval and a few minor name changes. I will send that and Pam’s article to the committee to read over. I think all that we are waiting for is Tim’s NEAPFD coverage and Geoff’s farewell. If we end up having way too much content we can shave some down or put a couple filler articles in the folder for the next issue.
I would like to push hard and get the next issue out in January and have a regular schedule every quarter. Jan, April, July and Oct. Of course we can do what ever we want to but keeping to a schedule may add a slight professional polish.
Ethan and others that have a few spare minutes…
The newsletter was originally designed to support its self financially through selling space for adds, this was Lisa’s super strong point, that woman could sell ad space! Even though we have a nice grant to use this year we may want to strive to make the newsletter pay for itself in the future. It would certainly not hurt us to have a few more adds for this edition. I think if you count mine that I need to send Jean we have 4 and only 3 will be paid for (we can’t charge our fiscal sponsor, they are so good us)For the January issue it would be nice to invite SFJ to promote their annual auction and publication in exchange for an add in their paper. Dale Stoltfus needs an add for the HPD book in January and we can do like last year and have them on our business directory and in our newsletter that doubles as promotional material. Anyway just a few things to be thinking of…
dominiquer60ModeratorRobin,
I remember that and I have to admit that I dropped the ball. Sometimes transitions are overwhelming to say the least and we certainly had our share of hiccups last Spring. But now we have some new ambitious board members (not trying to put down past board members at all) and our Administrator! We are slowly working towards some promotional materials and such for some small events that are coming up. If you could email Jean she can put you on the list of people that are having these materials mailed to them, or if you want she could email them to you when they are done and you could print them out too.
Having a presence at events like yours is a great opportunity to let people know who we are and the resources that we have to offer them. I think that this year will be much smoother as we restock our committees and settle in to ourselves, most of all having Jean as a central contact for members and directors will be most helpful. In just the few months that she has been hired she has already made a huge difference.
Your past help and offers are greatly appreciated,
Erika
dominiquer60ModeratorWe also want to extend this to all of our DAP forum users. If you are not registered please consider registering and joining the conversations. If you are a registered user and enjoy using the forum or see value in what we offer when you do use it, please consider becoming a member of DAPNet.
Anybody is welcome to join a committee. There are many minor tasks that seem small, but are a huge help to those of us committed to the organization. Join us to help proof read the newsletter, join us to write some content for the website, want to hold a recognized workshop at your place, join our events and programs committee. Do you know of a grant opportunity that would apply to us, pass it on to our budget committee.
The Board of directors is only a group of 12 people that volunteer their time to advance this organization and to help others interested in draft animals. No one on the board of directors is paid or gains any financial benefits from being involved. We do become familiar with other members and benefit from all of the great resources and discussions that all of us DAP users are exposed to in person at events and online. The only paid person on staff is our wonderful Administrator Jean Cross, she does a lot of grunt work and keeps our books, records and database in one central location, things that a volunteer should not be expected to do.
So please contact any of us with any questions or suggestions, and better yet solutions that you would be willing to help work on.
We are here to help each other be better long distance neighbors in a small but growing community.
dominiquer60ModeratorThank you both for doing a great job, it looks great!
don’t worry about causing hiccups, these web things are not easy and they take a lot of trial and error, plus they make people realize that real people are involved in this forum and network thingy:)
dominiquer60ModeratorOur administrators are trying to update the front page to promote DAPNet membership (http://www.draftanimalpowernetwork.org/membership.html) so that we can raise money to go towards things like technical support for our DAP forum here. We are a little green at some of this stuff so bear with us, and let us know if this continues to be a problem.
Thanks for your support,
Erika
