I drove my new team today hitched them to the log arch and drove all over the farm and down the road. They walked through puddles didn’t mind cars passing stood tied the mare is a little more nervous then the gelding but very manageable. Now I have to go out of town for a week to install a chiller. My daughter will most likely drive them wile I’m gone. I will try to get then hooked as much as can and to as many things as I can. I can’t wait to hook them again. Eli

I would be cutting but I’m stuck in Madison for 3 days getting an education. My neighbor was going to try my hay if he got time but he hasent called me back yet so I don’t know if he did. He will use his 3020 JD and 9foot 990 IH wind rower so 10 acres won’t take long. I love making hay it’s the best time of year. Eli

I graze my horses all the time and if i think it is to rich I feed a little hay. The more lush it is the more dry hay I feed and no grain. I rotationally grazed my dairy cattle for the first five years I farmed. You should be able to find info on estimating forage quality from your local ag agent. I got a ton of info on grazing from them years ago. Eli

I don’t need any straw but I love the super c tractor I sas cutting hay with one this morning. Had one when I was a kid learned to cultivate corn with one when I was about 10. Great little tractor. Eli

Dairy farmers are cutting hay like crazy relative feed value just under 200 I best wait a week or so that’s a little hot for horses. I’m usually ready about a week after the hay. Eli

Interesting I see horse drawn ones sitting around in the weeds. We use a lot of rotary rakes to dry hay. I always had a 2-300 acres of hay we cut with a mower conditioner or diskbine but if the weather didn’t cooperate we made it as haylege at 60% moisture. With all the cows around the hay making equipment is pretty large. I still round bale every thing because of my work schedule. The hotter it gets the more refrigeration work I do. So I do cooling work when the sun shines. Eli

I was just wondering how popular tenders are, I have been making hay for almost 40 years and haven’t seen many tenders used in my area of Wisconsin. I’ve cut hay with most machines but never horses, I hope to this summer.

Do most people use tenders they are not popular in my area even when I was a kid and most cut with a mower I didn’t see them used much. Eli

Hay in north east Wisconsin needs a few weeks but at least I’m not buying any more. Put some fertilizer on a month ago and it looks pretty good. I look for a big hi pressure to the west and cut then hope for the best. Eli

Just a little update scarlet has been in training for a month now and is doing super. She is in better shape than ever. Saturday she was part of a 6 abreast hitch pulling a disk. Ernie has driven her single double triple and part of a 6 abreast hitch. She is much calmer, most likely because Earnie and his Father and Brother are very calm people. I hope to bring her home next week end. I still hope to buy the Halflinger/Belgian and cut hay this summer. But time will tell. I had hoped to do a little field work this spring but it didn’t work out. I have been busy building a cultimulcher all I need is the pole. Eli
