I started thinking after reading what others were up against when they were thinking about pto cart. I will have a few parts and enough scrap left from a log forwarder Im pieceing together and thought this would be a good place to use them.
j.l.holtParticipantWell at this time its just talk. I’m toying with this just like everyone else. I know plenty who say they do it all with the horses but they still have the old tractor in the shed for back up. I’m more incline to build one just for the nay sayers. That’s the way it is with the logging forwarder I’m gathering parts and pieces for. It take a good while unless you just go down and buy everything new. But hunting good deals on things is half the fun!
As important as haying on time is..I would say save a buck or two through the year and use the tractor for baling. I know everyone says that it cost to much to just build one to do it,but life is more than money to me. I like to talk over plans with others to hear what they have to say, and how they would do it.
j.l.holtParticipantIf things are just to hard to pull after all the gear work, my only thing to do is buy one of the balers I’v been looking at that is made to pull behind a 20hp yard tractor. They also make hay bind style mowers and different rakes. All set up for the 20hp range of tractor.
j.l.holtParticipantMy desire is to pull a baler and mower. I just don’t know right off how well they will perform at slower rpm speed. Yes, they will turn over easier, but do they run at their peak efficiency. Turning at 300 rpms is a lot easier than 500. So hitting that gear slot is a must. Then getting the traction will be a factor. If the baler labors, will it start to slide the wheels?
j.l.holtParticipantThe info I have on the I-J cart is 350-500 and 375-500. So I have a bigger slot to shoot for. When I decide which one it will not be a issue to hit it. Time will tell.
j.l.holtParticipantDonn…. On all the older tractors, the PTO was not live. It worked as the main gear box did. Clutch in stops power, but does not keep it from pushing.
Paulk…I think the gear box would add to much ”drive train” drag to the system. Unless you plan on 3-4 head every hook. All equipment is set to run at its peak on the 540 RPM scale..If you just made sure your cart could keep 540, you should be all right. I was evening toying with setting up to run 545-550 so when the team got a little wore down, they were still at 540. Alittle extra speed would not hurt a thing. The biggest thing I see is getting enough traction with out adding undo weight.
j.l.holtParticipantThat is what I was talking about and thinking.. Might not of explained it well enough to the first person who responded. So now just put it line at the shop door. I’m building a log forwarder and had parts and pieces left. And after reading the fore cart posts, got the idea it would be a good place for the left overs of that job.
j.l.holtParticipantPaulk,,,if you ever get into building one, shoot me a e-mail and we can compare building ideas.
j.l.holtParticipantIt will start right up…its the stop I was thinking about. You have had a baler run on or a brush hog. Just a few turns will run against the horses. I know it won’t be far or fast but just help them out..I guess I could just kick the drive out of gear.
j.l.holtParticipantA over ride clutch will stop the cart from lunging forward as you stop. The fly wheel on a baler runs on after you stop. Just a few turns but it pushes. Like a brush mower. When you stop it rolls on to a stop. Just wanted to stop the push. Its like a old 8N ford with out a live PTO. When you stopped with it and pushed in the clutch, the PTO will push you. Sorry, but I felt it would be nice to get rid of that, not so ?
j.l.holtParticipantCould a thin layer of rust been ground into the skin in this area ? Then a little skin sloughed off.
j.l.holtParticipantI carried a large yellow envelope in the glove of the truck..Stuck all paper work in there. At the end of the month, added up everything and wrote it on the out side. Sealed them in to not lose.. If it was written in the side,,I had a receipt in side. Wrote the month on it and all the info was together for tax time.
j.l.holtParticipantAre these bits still chrome plated, or has that wore off. Is this the first time? Any chance its from something they ate ?
j.l.holtParticipantThe bit is not pinching where the bridle ring flexes? One place or both sides? Look for a burr on the bit.
j.l.holtParticipantKeep in mind you can put a removable post in the opening for the logs. this carries the load while you are not there. Mount a barn door hinge and life it up and away.
