I fear that as “peak oil” deepens, and oil gets harder to get, the world will forget the wilderness and sensitive areas in desperation to keep cars and our modern way going.. at any cost..

Great reading Carl… I think “divide and conquer” is the game they are playing. They did it with the milk, they tried it over here with so called “beef clubs” as an attemt to do away with auction markets. Agriculture and the very farmers that do it are totally fragmented and when the powers that be see a glimmer of people rebelling they bring out new regulations which small producers find harder each year to stick to… mabey a moble slaughter unit on a self drive basis might be the way forward:D.. a bit like a group of folks leasing a milk cow…

What I cant get my head round is the fact we in the “developed” world are told we cant give grain to the countries that are starving because it would undermine their grain market !!!!! if the countries people are starving why would their grain be for sale in the 1st place .. but I suppose if you have half baked zelots like mugabee running the show anythings possible..

The way I have done if is give them the bulk of their hay ration at night. Over much hay for a hard working horse can lead to excess sweating and blowing. I feed chopped hay and mix the grain ration with soaked beet pulp..this way the ration can be adjusted more easily to suit the work load. I not only cut the ration on rest days but cut it the day before and resume full ration after a day at work. Feed for actual work and not anticipated work. Regards the grazing we let them out at night and in the barn during the heat of the day if the grass is in abundance when they arnt working…as I always say… it works for me.. good luck and enjoy those horses..

Great idea Donn.. up to now I use a handfull of last years hay for the job:cool:… Rod I hear you on the “cheap” stuff. I work on the railways and a few years ago the rail company thought they would save money buying in rail from China {made with the scrap metal WE send them BTW}.. anyway what happened was that it wore out on the bends in like 5yrs.. British made rail had been down since the 60s !!!!

In the UK we have such a mixed up system. Single farm payment is the main subsidy. This was based on what a farm was producing at a given date.. i forget the year now. Unfortunatly it seems to favour the big guys more than the small family farm..which i am sure the UK wants to erradicate BTW. There is also schemes in place for planting trees and maintaining hedgrows ??.. I think ultimatly the subsidy system will have to stop and perverse as it may sound it may be a good thing ..
