Hi Douglas, glad to hear you on here… could’ve done with your skill this hay time with my anique mower;).. Im sure you will get answers to all your questions right here on this site. DAP is the main forum out there for trading info on not only draft animals but sustainable farming. Hope you have fun on here…and with any luck you’ll come up with a breakthrough for draft powered machines.. besides we Scots invented like…….everything hahaha ..

We have the same problem here??? New Zealand lamb comes halfway round the world but is “allegedly” cheaper than our own Scottish lamb ?? I fail to see how that can be possible but there you go..

Just as wet over here guy’s..mind you John we havent had 6″ of water yet !!! mega dry May and a soaking in June and July led to some dodgy hay to say the least. The Timothy hay up country is still to be cut and has turned dead on its feet…

we do quite a few parades and so far have never had a problem in 20 odd yrs.. I would add that farm horses tend to be driven by voice command a lot and we tend to rely less on line control .. A parade team need to drive on the lines and respond instantly..we have been in situations where the noise means the team cant hear me.. their ears give the game away.. so if your gut tells you either you or the team arent good to go then dont !!!..

Hi Ed .. sorry I missed your post.. we have been rained on pretty much constant here on the west coast but now {3rd July} we have had a good spell but we still wont make hay.. Been dry but not a lot of wind, not ideal for hay so we will wrap in the plastic..not ideal but better than mouldy hay…

Hey Mitch we have a high rainfall here and I would go for the windrowing it.. it dries the ground quicker and and gives you somewhere to move the hay to…

I use a bull nose ring for that job and so far so good.. keep a couple for harness repair if a steel ring gives out. Luckily only had to use it once in 25 years though…

Stress may be another factor worth looking at.. We have 2 geldings that usually do the wagon work. The old black horse is over 20 now and has always been the underdog to the younger horse.. When out at grass he is fine because he can get away to his own space or if he is turned out with the mares but when stabled they are next door and the old horses dung goes looser ?? mabey a connection ??…

Carl over here the buckles were adjustable from the box seat to either let a horse out or in.. Harness I use has the shorter coupling lines..

Excellent point Jen.. I had that once when ground driving a team out the barn.. again luckily they stopped on voice command. Think Im goin to cut up some old halters now too.. BTW the old English team lines have much longer coupling lines with the buckles up over the horses butts…

Pretty much the same scene here. The grass is under stress now and on top of that we have a cold wind which hasnt helped. The big dairies cut silage here to the calender regardless of how much bulk they have just so they can squeeze 3 cuts out of a season….

over here we used to be able to get a halter made of thin webbing…same stuff that seat belts are made of and it could sit under the bridle with no problems at all. I know it may look better with just the bridle on but I prefer the knowledge that if I have a problem the team can be tied safely. I dont know how mine would react if tied by the back pad ?

Erik another way to power up the farm could be a digester. These seem really popular in europe and would give you the methane to power the car… a lot of initial expense again tho ??? seems there are no easy answers..each “solution” raises more questions than answers…
