Looks like you might want some longer lines, or shorten the heel chains.

Yeah, the first thing I did after unharnessing was to run to the house and order longer lines from Meader. I actually dropped one of the lines today. Scared the sh#$* out of me, but there was plenty of incentive for a ‘whoa’ with a simple voice cue and I collected the rein without incident.

Not to take away from your marvelous mower, Carl, but check this little gadget out! Its a garden harrow, kind of like a mini cultipacker.

I haven’t had Peanut out for work in weeks, but he was a complete star! We ground drove to the arena about 1/4 mile then did some practice stops (he has a tendency to want to take a step back when he stops, sometimes stepping on the singletree or chain). Once he was stopping without the extra steps, I hooked him up, put those tines in the sand and off we went. It was hard work for him and I took the opportunity to practice ‘whoa’ alot. He really seemed to enjoy the work and stood like a statue for unharnessing and a shower. He actually had that seasoned look in his eye by the time we were done. Very satisfying little bit of work!

Rick, I cannot imagine a horse that could not get used to eating ‘in harness’, lol. I mean, come on, it sure beats not eating! I feed treats when I am working around my horses, when working on something new or something difficult. I never bribe them, but I like them to work on ‘guessing’ when I might treat them and they work harder to find the link. It might be with me in the saddle or them in harness…shouldn’t matter, really.

Looks like ‘scratches’ but the location is alittle off. Is there any crud behind the fetlock?

Ed, as you mentioned, you have seen my compost shed. Its 3 bins…all 10 x10 with removable walls on 3 sides. The back side and floor are cement. The walls are 4 feet (the cement wall is alittle higher). It has a roof, but is open otherwise. Moisture has not been an issue and I have not had to add water to my compost.

In early spring, when it was still pretty cold out at night, I put the new piglets in one bin, while I finished filling the other two. In two weeks they had turned that pile over to my satisfaction. That pile went on my potato patch. Then I moved them to the other two bins, so they had twice as much room. They had both bins composted within the month and then they went to the goat pen, where they are now. Over all, I couldn’t be happier with that arrangement and will do it again next year.

The only change I would make (and still might) is to make to walls abit taller.

Bivol, I picked up 3 Muscovy ducklings yesterday. I have to say, I probably would have passed on them without your posting about them. We got a male who is black and brown (and currently missing…hopefully temporarily) and two girls who are the prettiest color blue-grey. They are indeed voracious bug eaters and the woman who we bought them from has seen them eat mice…whole. My only concern about them is that they are very independant and roam very widely….makes me nervous. I’ll post a photo when I find the male!

Wait a minute, Jean. Is shivers the same as EPSM? I had to look up your term and it sure sounds like it is Equine Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy and is a serious neuromuscular disorder. Is it possible that Cruiser got into some grain prior to your driving session…that would definately set him off. These horses don’t tolerate any grain at all, as you probably know.
