My short two cents worth; I have never even checked out the blogs. I look into the forum every day, sometimes twice or better and figure I will get where I need to be with that.
Jim OstergardParticipantGeorge,
Try this site: http://www.traditionalmarine.com/ And then maybe google marine pulleys (or blocks) Nova Scotia. Should be something for you in the Canadian Maritimes. Also same google with maybe Settle or other major fishing port. Good luck.Jim OstergardParticipantGeoff, I as so many others am greatly saddened for your loss. There really are not words that I can easily find but let me add prayers and blessings on you all from this small ridge in Maine. I have some stuff from the big boys I no longer have. How about a nice 25″ collar? Its yours gratis if needed and I ship it out. Linda and I are thinking of you all.

Thanks, Jim. Any specific kind of bridle you have used? I’ve been looking at the Dr. Cook bitless bridle.
I think it is worth a shot, since I think it will be several weeks until the wound on her tongue heals and it would allow us to get her out working again so she doesn’t lose too much condition before the season really gets going.
I have only used Dr. Cooks and like them as well as the people behind the scenes. I saw a video of a trainer in western Mass switching a number of horses with problems over and was impressed. The woman who got my haflinger-quarter horse started (he was three, just gedled and never been tied when we brought him home) started him in it and he twtiches wood and otherwise drives fine with. If you email Carole at Dr. Cooks Bitless bridle site she will answer any questions. I sort of figure that something like this is worth a try. Good Luck.
JimJim OstergardParticipantI decided to switch over to the bitless bridle when we first started training my 4 year old. That is all he has ever had on and so far it seems to work well. Since he is new as well as young, I don’t let go of the lines like I would with the older guys when loading the scoot or hooking up a twitch. I have now started 6 year old fjord in one and want to give it a go when I put these guys together. I would agree with Mink that if they are going to run I don’t see how a bit would stop them if they really wanted to go. Be interesting to see how this goes once we get back into the woods.

Way to many folks in DC just in the profession of being in the profession of being in DC. And thanks to all in this thread for the sane thoughts on this insane issue. Wasn’t about to think of compliance if NAIS had com about.
Jim OJim OstergardParticipantHere are some additional photos of the walking beam. Two show the pvc pipe as it would lay when hooking up and the other shows how the butt lifts as the roller travels up the bar. Wooden saw scabbard is shown.
Jim OstergardParticipantI don’t know much about them. I got a contract to log and cut 15 cords a year on a property up the road. That was the estimated amount of wood the engineers figured for the new wood gasification boiler which is heating 2 100′ greenhouses as well as the main house. Seemed awful optimistic to me and sure enough the landowner asked me a few weeks into the contract if I could cut 40 cords. The thing eats two cords a week of seasoned split 4′ wood with temperatures in the teens at night and twenties during the day. I think one needs a good wood lot to keep one of these things going. Just my two pennies worth.
Jim OJim OstergardParticipantBrian,
Harness looks great and so does the mare! I have order some custom stuff for the Scandinavian harness from Peach Lane Harness on your advice and can’t wait until it get here. I think you will have some fun working with her.
JimJim OstergardParticipantBack in the day we oiled boat decks with raw linseed oil, terps and pine tar. We heated the mixture and then applied it. No dryers in the raw oil so we got penetration. Need to be careful with the stuff when heating. The fumes will catch fire. We would heat it by placing the can in a pot of water and then heating the water. I’ve had a few fires though! On used motor oil I remember an old timer in Virginia describing how he used softwood fence posts and treated them by holding them in used motor oil for a month. Claimed he got 20-25 years out of ’em.
Jim OstergardParticipantThe pictures are great! Thanks for posting them. I have a go-devil built back in the ’40’s that I use and really like it. It is much narrower than yours. I also got from somewhere some pictures of one that has a swivel bunk on top and have wanted to try that on mine. The swedes attach a chain to the bottom of their stakes with a toggle so that you don’t loose them in the snow when loading or unlaoding. Sometimes on a turn it will flip and I assume that is due to the width. Really like the idea of two in the woods for the other fella to load. Again thanks. Love the unloading turn.
Jim OstergardParticipantMitch, you using line with the buckles spliced into it? If so what do you use. All the lobster catchers around here are using such hard lay stuff it is impossible to splice. I have some soft braided line I use but of course cannot splice it. Looks like with this mess we will be out of the woods. Too bad as I just landed a contract for 40 cords of firewood offen a wood-lot nearby.
JimJim OstergardParticipantSame here in Appleton, almost bare ground with ice. Wind is winding up all day long. Have not seen anything above freezing for the last 4 days though. Hard footing for the horses.
JimJim OstergardParticipantI have used the D-ring on my two singles in the woods for the last 6 years and really liked it. I have had both leather and nylon. Prefer the nylon just for ease of getting on a tall guy. I know where there is a leather D-ring in good shape for around $300 if you are interested. Private email me if you are interested.
JimJim OstergardParticipantLabonville is a good place also. They have a website and a good paper catalog.
