I have to agree also I ran my first farm 15 acres with a single horse at 1200lbs did my garden pastures loose hay and firewood never had any problems getting things done
kind of wish for those simpler times
also new an old timer who cut many thousands of bdft of pine and moved them all with a single horse
I believe nothing you cannot do with a single it is all judgement on load size and patience
if you have first time heavy tillage hire it out
I cut many loads of hay with a one horse mower a dump rake and a scoot to move it to the barn
some of the best hay I ever made

Donn I tried this at one time and found it to be a hassel backing the horse into the shafts
was hard to get the other shaft into the shaft loops once one side as lifted and in
yuo have to move horse forward to place the second shaft and the first would drop out
with the shafts attached together you set one loop than the other and back in a little further
if you have alot of play in your shaftloops it may work

Mark we use maple sugar in all our baking and canning
we boil the syrup down then grind the sugar in the blender
if it calls for a cup of sugar we use 1/2 cup as a starting point

I can see the point Carl is trying to make
I have seen “dead broke ” horses be completely confused about what to do in the hands of a person who did not understand how to communicate with the animals
they thought all you had to do was grab the lines point the horse and tell them to go and they would automatically do what you wanted.
I think a person who is good at human communication such as Car Russell also has the uncanny ability to communicate his wishes to his horses
When one sees an accomplished teamster work his horses it is a work of art
the horses are attuned to every move of the hands and tone of voice
I have always felt one trains by working a horse

I quess we should stop listening to the national weather forecasters
they have no idea of the weather I think they set up all the tourist for the 4th to get out and spend money with the forecast of dry sunny weather for the holiday weekend

can not tell you how many folks around here saw the 4 day forecast and mowed mowed mowed
alot of wet hay on the ground
I believe the horse hay customers are not going to be so fussy be luckey if they can find hay down here this year
I have been turning away customers all month
round wrapped bales has saved alot of rained on hay for me this year my bovines will eat good and the horses will be getting second cutting if the sun ever shines for more than 12 hours
hope you all are having better luck than I
