Having sold my grey mares and the fillies not grown out enough for work yet I may be skipping sugaring this season. Was hoping to find a good size single horse to pick buckets with (eliminated all my tubing) but no luck so far.
Just maybe will be visiting other sugarhouses this season. anyone with a team out there want to sugar on shares

when I first started with draft horses my mentor went out and got me a green 2yr old to start with
I feel it was the best way to start for me the colt knew nothing and I knew nothing
he showed me how to fit the harness then said go ground drive did that for weeks before he saw we were competent in starting stopping and backing he then showed me how to hitch single to a wagon and said drive if things get hairy just drive I want to find you and the horse together no matter what he also said he didnt care if I AND THE HORSE WRECKED AND DIED HE WANTED TO FIND ME WITH THE COLT AND MY HANDS ON THE LINES the lines have been in my hand ever since

Jen I shoot for an average of 100 hundred bales per acre over 2 3 cuts per year this with annual soil testing and adding soil amendments as indicated. This is all possible using organic practices. When I first bought my present farm we were lucky to get one good cutting. Now 12 years later I can get 3 maybe 4 cuttings and a fall pasturing out of most of my hay fields which produce a mineral balenced forage for my dairy .

George when making your choices keep in mind that your farm is a living /growing organism you needs and the farm needs will change over time ie makets change , family needs change and as your farm grows its needs will change. The perfect farm to purchase does not exits within our budgets or anyones for that matter. You need to have a good idea of where you want to go with this lifestyle and look for the piece of property that will best help fullfill these goals keeping in mind to stay flexable and look at each property as unigue in its own and how it might best contribute to your goals.Look for a property with enough flexability in its uses and resources so you can evovle and adapt as the situations arise. Grow slowly as the markets exspand but also keep in mind your own physical and finacial wellbeing.I have always operated on the principle every need I can provide foe myself and family is one less dollar that I have to make and one more dollar I can keep for myself.

george I would suggest hitching to your scoot or sled the first time I feel it is easier to learn to stop and stand without the forward movement of wheels and if you have a good strong safe horse to hitch with and are confident in his responses I would not consider
buckbacks a good set of hands and confident driver will do the trick

George I mow all my hay fields at a height of 3to 4 inches and plan to recut every 30 days for 3 cuttings and a fall pasturing this for making dairy quality hay [baleage and dry rounds] a little less yield per cutting but more and better milk quality feed in the long run
