“the older I get the more I want younger horses.”
That statement is just begging for some exposition. 🙂
    Hope you find them.
Mine are now 15 & coming 10. I am wondering if I will have more when they are gone…

Well, the organizer would be someone other than me…
Is it at your place? Do you have stabling? Bunking?

Wow. I’ve had bit rings get caught there but not teeth!
Makes me go over the way I do things in my head. First, make sure my knife is sharp enough to cut whatever I need to cut when I need to cut it. Second, keep the whole rig as short as possible, figuring that the further back the neck yoke assembly is (closer to the horse), the less likely they are to get hung up in it. Of course there is a practical limit on how close the jockey yoke can be to the horse. For a place to start from, I adjust my front side straps so the hooks will just catch in the top ring of the front lazy strap. I remember when Les Barden showed me that, it was at the get together up at the Ames’ several winters ago.
Not saying George or Carl aren’t running perfectly safe, well adjusted rigs, just expanding a little with some thoughts and observations folks may find useful.
You never know when that 1% chance event will occur, or for that matter the 0.1%….

    Brad,
How is your re-built/re-configured Plowden arch working out for you?

Great day today at Cummington. A few highlights that I saw were mower stuff w Don, training & harness fit w Neal, Bill West plowing & mowing and an incredible cultivating brain trust of Stephen Leslie, Chuck Cox and David Fisher. Along with the usual fantastic visiting & food. VERY heartening to see all the dedicated young folks there.
Thanks all for a great day.
When should I come after my new mower?

    Hi Michael,
Any photos of the rig from other angles? What do you plan to use it for?
    Thanks,

    Brad,
I have a small 120v, wire feed unit made or marketed by Hobart. Northern Tool has a bunch of them. I use a flux core wire that is a bit nasty (spattery) but gets done what I need.
Sounds like George has more experience though.
I do not do the welding on the arches myself. I don’t think I could do a professional,or professional looking, job w the rig I have.

    Donn,
Everyone’s situation & management style and program is different. I appreciate your even handed discussion of pros & cons.
I know from previous discussions that you use a variety of horses in a variety of configurations. I use a team almost exclusively, I leave my lines on the harness, I use each horse on the same side all the time. I also work alone pretty much all the time, I am 60, and there is usually no one else even on the property. Hence my belt and suspenders approach. Consequently it is no big deal for me to leave the butt rope on the near horses harness when not hitched and employ it regularly.

    George,
My setup is a bit of a hybrid. I never liked the connecting the inside britchen rings as when I saw it in use it seemed to be pulling at the harness in an awkward way, fanning the inside of the britchen away from the horse before pressure is applied. WHEN USING A D-RING HARNESS, connecting the hames means using a lot more line that seems pointless and in the way. The BR runs right by the outside britchen ring which is connected through the side strap, D-ring and short tug to the hame. So I run the BR from outside britchen ring to outside britchen ring. This works very well for me.

A note on the fairs. The butt rope is not prohibited but a point deduction is taken.
