people around here paint their new decks with motor oil . when mine was new i used oil and got about 12 years with a poplar board deck. im not sure if it did anything to extend the life. my new wagon deck is pressure treated deck boards, im hoping for 20 plus years from this one.
minkParticipanti use a square knot and leave the ends long enough i can really pull it tight then cut the string to about one inch on each side .
minkParticipanti stack my hay off the baler but i use a tractor so i guess i cant answer your question . but with the tractor and one person on the wagon it goes slick.my baler has chains on both sides of the chute to raise it to clear your wagon bed.
minkParticipantglad i changed my mind about mowing yesterday ,its looking like rain again.i was wondering with this late cut hay how many people here feel you need to supplement extra grain this winter.
minkParticipantthe noon weather shows parts of new york, vermont and new hampshire and a slice of maine in flood watch again today. i think the good lord wants some skinnier horses in the north east.
minkParticipantmy way of thinking on the salt thing is, wet and green hay heat like hell and even it dont burn your barn down all you end up with is moldy dusty hay. like was mentioned here before you got to make hay in the field and not in the barn. i have baled some hay that would either be in a big wad or a sag in the field and get a wet or green bale , i always feed or throw it aside . about 2 days they get wicked hot if you stick your hand between the flakes. but the cows always get them never the barn.
minkParticipantit is so wet here in new york that even mowing the lawn the mud comes up in back of the lawn mower. carl you must be in a lucky spot in vermont as the channel 3 and 5 news has been showing rain for the last month and this morning it showed rain for the next 7 days… theres only a few places in this ellenburg area that a few dairy farmers have chopped hayledge on the high spots. looks like i might be taking the first and second cut in one swipe middle of july or later.

minkParticipantjust come in from blowing the drive with the tractor got an honest 12 inches or more already
minkParticipantbeing that high wouldnt the weight of the logs want to bend it back? i like your idea of lowering it so you can set on it.
minkParticipanti think it is just solid wood . id imagine the slow speed use it would last indefinately, maybe they squirted it with oil from time to time?
i had a neighbor use round wood blocks for a chain tensioner and they lasted for a very long timeminkParticipantdidnt the say that popple bark was like a natural wormer?
minkParticipantgeorge your getting some pretty good mileage with this thread:) from the last 2 posts i learned the horse is a multi-speed beast , being whoa, first gear , second gear and the oh shit this is going to hurt gear. all said you have a good post going on here . mink
