Instead of “rewarding” the problem mare when she decides to come to you. Reward her team mate for doing the right thing in the first place. Food works to get horses to come, but I would be concerned that I was “rewarding” bad behavior. Horses are not dumb animals. We just have to be smarter.
njfarmerParticipantMy tractor supply only carries the white and red blocks no yellow one. But we feed selenium supplement with morning feedings. All our horses also get metamucil in the am since we have had past issues with sand colic.
njfarmerParticipantJim just a thought but could you put some sort of water circulator pump in the large tank in the barn? moving water is hard to freeze. maybe something like a pond fountain pump or water jet?
njfarmerParticipantI put a red salt/ mineral block that I get from the local tractor supply next to the water tub. My belgian seems to fancy it. every couple months its time for a new one.
njfarmerParticipantRobin-
For the most part I think the shelters are well manned with volunteers. I did hear that Red Cross put a call to arms for CDL drivers. They had 100 trucks loaded with supplies but no one to drive them. Looting has been a problem along with idiots stealing folks generators. I think there is a special place in hell for those jerks. But for the most part Jerseyians have come together to help eachother out. The gas lines have mostly gone away. But it was pretty bad in the northern parts of the state. Some waiting 4+ hrs for gas. But if anything good came out of this people now know their neighbors.njfarmerParticipantWell we survived Sandy’s devestation here in southern NJ. We are about 30 minutes from Long Beach Island (LBI). If you have seen any pictures in the news they got decimated. Its such ashame. We were very fortunate here. We were out of power for 4 days, which seems like nothing since people still dont have it and some have no home to return to. It was an adventureous night during the storm. I went out at about 1:30 am to fill the generator and saw the hay barn roof starting to lift off. Since hay has gotten a bit silly in price this year I figured something had to be done. So in the midst of 50 mph winds and rain coming down sideways here I was on an extension ladder nailing the roofing back down. Luckily the wind was at my back blowing me into the barn. In hindsight it was probably really stupid to do this, but hindsight is 20-20 and the barn is full of dry hay. The wife was pretty mad at me when she found out in the morning. But otherwise all the horses and everything faired well. The horses dont care to be locked in their stalls but they got used to it. Luckily we had about 400 gallons of water to get us through not having power. Our prayers are with the families that have lost loved ones and their homes. Please keep NJ in your thoughts.
njfarmerParticipantDonn enjoyable was my choice over saying not so darn frustrating. I appreciate the pointers tho.
njfarmerParticipantAndy,
I guess it really depends on what piece of equipment you were using. With your wheel hoe you use more of a cutting action so I would assume it would work much better with a sharp edge. However on say a walking cultivator where the sweeps and going into the ground vertically I dont think it reallu matters. The cultivator is more or less dragging the sweeps through. I have never used a wheel hoe. Although I am not a huge fan of the traditional hoe. Is the wheel hoe easier on the back? And does it do an efficent job?
BriannjfarmerParticipantSo where the heck is the DAPNet tent/ booth. I walked around for awhile and did not see it anywhere and it wasnt on the chart at the information tent. Saw the Rural Heritage tent.
njfarmerParticipantGeoff,
If you dont mind me asking. What did the new metal board from Kosch run you? I am looking for one for a mc #6. Thanks
BriannjfarmerParticipantIxy,
If you are only wanting to power the baler and nothing else, why even build a powered fore cart. Just put the small engine right on the baler. I have seen quite a bit of them out in lancaster, pa. But if you plan on getting other equipment that is pto driven then I would go with the powered fore cart.njfarmerParticipantErika,
Are there deals to be had or are the prices jacked up cause everyone is there? Sometimes affairs like this I find the prices somewhat inflated. but have never been to a HPD event.njfarmerParticipantDonn,
Just plant crooked rows then that stuburn digger will run straight! Haha good luck.
BriannjfarmerParticipantWould 5ft long by 3ft wide be too large of a stone boat for a single horse to pull around? Mainly going to be used to get her into shape for field work and maybe down the road move a round bale down to the fields.
njfarmerParticipantLanny,
Thank you for the pictures that helps a lot. Your stoneboat came out really nice. - AuthorPosts
