Does anyone subscribe to the Small Farm Journal? I subscribe to Rural Heritage and think its a great magazine. Plus it comes out every two months instead of quarterly. I was just looking for another one to read and wasnt sure which one is better Small Farm Journal or the Draft Horse Journal? Thanks
njfarmerParticipantWhat did you think of it? I also have the DVD. I thought it was a real nice presentation. Although I may be partial since its all about horse farming in NJ. lol
njfarmerParticipantPhil that was a great deal! It looks to be a pretty good condition. Do all the parts move or are they rusted stuck? That will really decide how to go about getting it up to speed. Also probably want to change the blades.

is it freezing up at night where you are? it has to do that to run sap.
Mitch I have come to the conclusion that I may have missed the season. Doesnt it stop once the trees come to bud? Also I pulled the two taps out since nothing was happening. We have been having weird weather here freezing one day 60 the next day. It is freezing most nights maybe not all of them. I will just wait until the leaves develope and will mark the maple trees just to make sure that I am actually tapping maples and not oaks. Which could also be my problem. I tried using the leaves under the tree as a clue but it seems there are leaves of every shape and size and type. So no syrup this year. Oh well.
njfarmerParticipantSo I have a question for all you experienced tappers. I tapped two maple trees(at least what Im pretty sure are maple) this afternoon. No sap came out though. I was wondering am I too late for the sap flow or was it too warm. I drilled a 1/2 hole at an upward angle about 2 inches deep. I used a standard plastic 1/2 inch hose adapter. One that you would use to fix a hole or split inline. But no sap. I probably tapped at about 4pm. Not ideal but thats when I got back from tractor supply after having the idea I want to attempt to make some maple syrup. Any thoughts? The only thing I can think of is maybe it isnt a maple. LOL
njfarmerParticipantHave you looked into interning at Howell Living History farm in New Jersey? Its around the corner from us. They do everything old fashioned with horses and oxen. They take a couple of interns each year. The website is http://www.howellfarm.org. The guy in charge of the intern program is Rob Flory he can be reached at 609-737-3299 or rflory@mercercounty.org. I believe the give you private room in the farmhouse with shared kitchen and bathrooms. Some kind of stipend and you are responsible for your own food. But I think you get some produce from the farm or something like that. Good luck with the job hunting.
njfarmerParticipantBrandon- That is very true. One day I hope to have a tongue in between two horses.
njfarmerParticipantI was wondering if loose stool can be a side effect of all the water the beet pulp absorbs. My belgian mare doesnt have diarrhea but the stool most of the time appears loose in soft. But generally formed. I am also feeding vegetable oil and have heard this could be causing it too.

I am a beginner and received Doc Hammills gentle training 2 and preventing wrecks. They are VERY informative although can get a little dry especially when watching it straight through. They are a little pricey but well worth it in my opinion. I had a warmblood cross that was a pain to halter. I tried the methods used in the dvd and within a day she is lowering her head so I can put the halter on easy.
njfarmerParticipantIs the forecart still available? If so could you email me pictures at houghfamilyfarm@gmail.com. also whereabouts in nj are you located. Im down in the pinelands. Thanks
