I don’t know how she’ll act when we get her home, but right now getting her to come isn’t a problem! She was in my pocket the whole time…… Don’t know if it was because of her loner type attitude towards the other donkeys or what. Be she let me pet her and even walk her on halter for a little:D.

    Okay I need opinions.
Her hooves look aweful. Well,I have seen worse on “rescue” horses but they are a little over grown. They don’t seem to be causing her pain but they need to be trimmed. She is also EXTREMELY thin. My question is,should I clean her up and put some weight on her now or after I get her hooves trimmed? There is a distinct ridge where her spine is,so in my book, she needs much better quality hay. (just the timothy/orchard grass mix that we feed but it is better than the rotted mass that they had) So should we tidy up the donkey or the hooves first?

Yes. The rat urine will make things rusty and stinky in a hurry.

You could get into the grain buisness. Is it a tow behind model or is it self propelled? I know quite abit about old Ag equipment,So just give me a model number and I can tell you all sorts of things! Yes I wiuld buy it,if it was under $2000. That is my limit for things pre-’75.

It is the plan to go and get her Saturday or Sunday. That way I will be off from school for a little while and be able to observe her for a little bit. Anybody that knows about the weather here on the east coast is bound to know about the snow. So we will get her when we can.

I am tellin’ you! We thought that this would be a nice place to start and see what happens. She is about 6 years old and the most friendly animal they had. She is colored like your “traditional” mule.(dark body/white nose) I am going to get my neighbor the,mule-man/farrier/mentor/duck wrangler(long story) to trim her hooves as they are absolutely aweful! Anyhow I figured I would let y’all know.

I went over to my neighbor’s the other day,for 2 reasons. A-because his cows were hollering someting aweful, and B-Cause I wanted to talk about horses.

This is the information I got.
Horses and Mules are actually alot alike. Mules, aren’t “stubborn” they are just looking out for their best interests. Horse’s are more “trusting”. (he said that trusting isn’t the word he was looking for,but it gets the point across) Good horses will listen to you, majority of the time,if they are in an uneasy situation. Always pick the kind of animal that YOU like. You will never be happy if you don’t. He also said that in his humble opinion that horses are better for beginners than ponys. He has never had a pony but one of his friends couldn’t do a darn thing with them.
His most important word of advice that he tells all beginners,”never, ever, ever let the horses push you around” “Don’t take any crap off of them.”

So that was a start I guess.

I evaluted my situation. He said that my current “fleet” of sheds will be just fine for any creature I buy.So I guess now I just have to resharpen my horse handling skills and start my research.
    Thanks Guys

    Donn,
He farms T-totally with those mules. He has 4 teams of mules all in various stages of training. He trains mules for the park services and the whole 9 yards. Whenever I am over there, the mules that aren’t working run over to the fence and try to get me to pay attention to them. (They are friendly little boogers) I’ll walk over to them and say,” I’m sorry I don’t pet mules on (day of the week)” But then I have to pet and talk to EVERYBODY including the dog. So going over there is very time consuming……:)

    Yeah,
Once you get a system down for hay bales you can really go at it.
