Now a hinny would tend to have more of the donkey’s influence, as its mother of course tends to set its mannerisms….

That horse must have deep confidence and trust in you…and obviously, for good reason. Good save!

I think its probably a matter of the human…if YOU really like that particular animal, I truly believe that that animal knows this…and will respond better for that person…especially if that animal likes you, too. I always heard that oxen were stronger, horses faster, donkeys tougher and mules gave more speed and strength than a donkey, and more stamina/endurance than a horse. Its interesting reading here on how different people view the differences…I feel more attuned to donkeys (yeah, I know that leaves me wide open for comments, here LOL), and find them easy to train – that they prefer human company more-so than horses. Not that I’m really experienced at all. I got into donkeys because from what I studied and researched, they seemed to fit my way of doing things “more better” –> I expect more from them than I do the mules and horses I’m in contact with, in terms of focusing on me, understanding my fumbling attempts to teach and communicate, and such. When I screw up, I noticed that an ear scratch, an apology and a hug from me, and all is forgiven. Not forgotten…but forgiven. I guess I’m saying that I think – for me – donkeys can adapt to me and my limited skills better – I’m pretty sure that if the mistakes I made w/ my girls were done on a horse, I’d have ruined that horse. I’d really hate to have that happen.
As for how much work I can get from them…with this D-ring harness I got (big thanks to Rod!!), my 52″, 650 lb. Jenny-Mae is set to start snigging small firewood logs within the next week or so, starting w/ a 4″ diameter, 6 ft. lodgepolepine I’ve got waiting for her.

You might substitute the word Donkey for ox but not the power. My standard donkeys can just about pull my empty stone boat.

Wow. How much does that stone boat weigh?

    Hi folks!
i’m also interested in breeding mules (and hinnies!), but for now i’ll have to settle for asking questions…

this may be beginner stuff, but….

i’d like to know if your mare/donkey was raised to be a mule-breeder, or is s/he just your regular mare/donkey?

    question explanation: in mule breeding

    – mares are reluctant to be bred by donkeys, so it is considered that mule producing mares:
    1. shouldn’t be humped by a stallion before they have a go with a donkey, or otherwise they’re reluctant to breed from him
    2. that mares dont like donkeys if they before had anything to do with stallions.
    3. that mares have to have their mane and tails cut short, or else they don’t allow the donkey to hump them.

    – donkeys:
they have to be raised around mares to wanting to hump them…

in books they all say this stuff in necessary, but i dunno….

what’s your experiences, any of that true?

or, you can post me a link to a thread dealing with these issues

    thanks!
    Marko

I got the harness…spent 2 hours adjusting it – I find that fun, but then, I’m weird. Got a couple of extra strapsw/ hooks I’m unsure of, yet. Collar finally got shipped on Thursday… Today’s (finally) sunny after 4 days or so of steady rain. I’m gonna see what Jenny-Mae will do w/ her new harness and custom-made singletree.

I might reschedule this shindig in a couple of weeks, if there’s interest.

Well, I’ve decided that since it’s supposed to rain all weekend, and that there’s only two of us due to show up for sure, that I’m just going to cancel this shindig. Perhaps another time, maybe in the Spring.

    Life happens, ayuh?

Oh, I’m pretty much done w/ the moving…tha playday? Doesn’t look too promising, number-of-people wise, but I’m gonna be there, my harness should be here tomorrow, my collar on Thursday, and I’m gonna have fun…and if anybody else shows up, I’ll have even MORE fun!

I’ve moved down to the garden ground…right where the donkeys are at on the river. I’m looking at a 5th wheel trailer to move down there. Until then, I’m ‘smoothing it’ (as opposed to ‘roughing it’) tucked up under the old mill shed that I’m using as a hay shed…
Bummer, Scott, that you can’t make it…heal up quick, will ya?

I’m shutting down and packing away this computer…one of that last things to get done w/ the moving. I’ll be online as I can, depending when I get to town. I will check back Monday or Tuesday, to see if anyone here needs directions or whatnot to the palyday – I’m still having it, although it seems many are going to be limited on their ability to attend.
I hope to see you there, come next weekend!
