    that tire chain hook is kind of what is used except it is bigger. the hook would beabout the size of the trace chain links.these hamesare used for farming and logging. this is what I use all the time. very common over the south.

    those hames are used with trace chains. there is a special hook to attach the chains to the hames.

    the holdbacks are called staychains most old wagons had hooks on the axle to attach them to.always used here in the south.

    if  you have a 40ft log it will not run as bad if you made it in to 4 ten foot logs and bring them all a once.

    in steep hills do not go straight up but quarter back to where you want to go.quartering means to do switch backs across the hill.

    always keep them reined up.never allow any grazing.if they still try it use a crupper .

    i will have one someday .i will use more mules no tractor.in the meantime crosshauling is cheap and efficient .i wish for someone to help me that wants to learn.

    most of ours are made of oak.inch planks are used mostly.when they rot you build another.

    in my neck of the woods we call this a drag.we use right after plowing to smooth the ground and help prevent clods.at the end of the day you drag it down.in the spring after it warms up it really helps.
