Erika, My grandfather used horses up into the 1950’s for farming and my mom remembers him using just the #9 wire to pull under the trash. It was wired fast at the hitch point for the double tree, then ran back around the upright shaft of the coulter or jointer, then down into the furrow. This piece was 8-10ft long and if you can picture where it goes it would fold over the tall trash and pull it down into the furrow under the soil. The wire would wear to a very sharp point from running under the turned soil and had to be replaced on a regular basis. As for the chain, I have seen pictures/drawings of this but she doesn’t remember him ever using it. What I wouldn’t give to spend some time picking his brain for info. I like to think he watches over me and guides me everytime I am out working with the horses.

I have seen books that showed using a wire or a chain to help pull under tall weeds and stalks. This is one I just found online with some other pointers for proper plow set up and use. http://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc5882/m1/12/

Although this storm will will do harm to some, I find it funny to watch the news reports on TV about the coming snowpocalypse. Meanwhile the folks on here are taking it as just another winter day. Stay safe everyone!!

Love the old photos Carl ! I see they had a burlap sack or something wrapping the pole back in the hock area as well. Must be some things never change. I do have a question about this type of set up. When stopping a load like this, what keeps the pole from rising in the front and having the yoke come up into the horses chin/mouth?

You could try M.E. Miller Tire in Pettisville, Oh. I doubt you will like the price but they will have it.

I know a few who have tried the 50/50 mix of ATF/acetone. Have not used it myself but heard it works well. Here is a link to someone who did a trial of several different types of penetrants.

I like the vpr.net and Eat more kale stickers the best!!! I wonder if PETA would have issues with him abusing a Civic like that?

Just a quick thought on using old/used oil for a wood preservative. I “think” that I have read or heard at one time that used oil has a high acidic level that actually is bad to use for wood. I have no experience with it and wondered if anyone else has heard that as well. Even though used oil is easily found, I think looking for an oil or other type preservative would be better suited.

    Juliana ,

My son is 5’8″ and weighs in at right around 200lbs. He rides his 13.2 Haflinger mare all day long. They do contesting and trail, as well as driving. Your size is not an issue. Saddle fit can be tricky for a Haflinger though. If I can get Picture trail to work, I’ll tack on a couple of pics too!

    Let’s see if this works.

    Rodw,

It took me a while but I found some pics of the 4 abreast evener that I have. It is made by Pioneer. The pictures are of a friend of mine and his 4 abreast team of Haflingers on a 12″ plow. I am not sure they ever broke a sweat and they plowed ALL day.
