I disced again today, tried to plant, but had technical difficulties. 🙁 Anyway, I took a few pics to share. The second shows what disced (not plowed) ground looks like after a cover crop of oats and turnips. There seems to be interest…

Thanks for posting, Andy…I didn’t realize your disc was D.I.Y. as well, but of course it is 🙂 It looks great.

    Andy,

Is the disc something you made from an old one? great job, my wheels are spinning now.
Where did you find the front dolley?

I made the disc from a used disc origionally made for a lawn tractor. It’s about 3.5 feet wide. I replaced the disc blades that caem with it b/c I was not happy with the penetration of the smooth disc that came with it. The notched blades work alot better. I got the front swivel wheel and seat from tractor supply. I like to buy used and/or recycled stuff when I can, but often end up having to mix in some new parts. What are you thinking of making?

    Andy,

I am working on an old disc currently and needed to make a new front dolley wheel very similare to yours. Still need to make some new boxing bushings and free up a couple of levers and it should be good to go. Nice work on yours.

The photo shows the wheel mocked up and not welded yet.

Ed, could you post a close up picture of the disc scrapers? The scrapers where missing on mine and I need to make some.

Nice Ed. This looks like the same front wheel that I have used. It has worked well. Mine doesn’t have scrapers, and sometimes have to clean out the mud by hand. Maybe once every half hour or so I get a clog… I think I will eventually make some sort of scraper too.

Thanks Ed. That gives me a few good ideas. Now I just need a little more time.

Hey guys, a quick fix for your disk plugging with mud is to put a loop of chain around each spindle and up over the frame. Connect the ends with a repair link or just a bolt with some washers that won’t pull through the links. Even dog chain will work. If you don’t like the chain idea a claw hammer is the best tool for digging out the mud. Use the claw of course.

Great tip Dave, I bet that works really well. I will have to be careful about the placement of the chain b/c I use notched discs, but I think I have room for them without a big risk of catching. Thanks!
