The full-time teamster at Greyrock Farm is responsible for the daily care and management of the horses, along with associated tools, equipment, stalls, pasture. During the height of the vegetable and hay season, the teamster can expect to be in the field with horses for several hours a day, 5-6 days a week. The teamster will be responsible for coordinating work and care of the horses on the days when he or she is not working.
Applicants must have at least 4 years of driving experience and must be familiar with horse-drawn farm equipment including plows, harrows, cultivators, and mowers. The ability to trim feet is not required but will be a consideration in hiring.
This position is full-time, year-round or seasonal, and is salaried: $25K for the year or pro-rated for seasonal employment. It is my goal to pay all the farmers at Greyrock Farm a $40K/year salary. Although I am not there yet I am confident that with the right people, especially the right vegetable production manager, we can get there soon. This is a great opportunity for someone who is knowledgeable, hard-working, responsible, and who wants to be part of a dynamic farm. If interested, please send a resume, cover letter, and professional references to Matt at mcvolz10@gmail.com.
Greyrock Farm is a highly diversified farm located in Cazenovia, NY. We grow vegetables; raise beef cattle, pigs and chickens; milk a small herd of grass-fed cows; tend a flock of laying hens; and do much of the work with our four Percheron draft horses. We market our produce, meats, milk and eggs through our year-round CSA program, at our on-farm retail store, and to local restaurants in Syracuse and Utica. We work with a growing list of other local farmers and producers to provide our customers with as much local food as possible. The draft horses at Greyrock Farm are used for a variety of purposes. Our vegetable operation, which consists of roughly 12 acres, is fully horse and human powered. The horses are used for primary and secondary tillage in the vegetable fields, as well as cultivation and in some cases harvest. Our horses also mow hay and clip pasture, spread manure, move wagons and occasionally give sleigh rides. For more information about the farm you can check out our website (greyrockfarmcsa.com) or look for us on Facebook (“Greyrock Farm CSA”.)
