This week the forecast is for seven sunny days. How much hay will everyone make this week. I am trying to plan around my DAP NET and NOFA NY Field days on Sunday. I hope to bale a bunch on Saturday and again on Monday and maybe Wed if the weather lasts that long. It will be a long and challenging week. I can see 900 to 1000 bales standing out there if I last that long. We have made about 600 so far, but all between the rain drops. Good luck to everyone, stay safe, and enjoy. Donn

In the 41 years we have been married, we have finished 1st cutting hay by June 12 about 4 or 5 times. We finished on June 10 this year. It was a short crop with lots of sun and wind to make hay with this year. 2500 in the barn and not a rained on bale in the lot. Last year we had to press to get done before we left for HPD in PA on the first of July. It’s been a good year to make hay. Growing hay, not so much. We need rain. Very dry in West Michigan, 120 north of Indiana.
June 14, 2012 at 11:39 pm #74225karl t pfisterParticipantThe best stretch June hay making weather I ‘ve seen in quite a while we usually struggle with june hay . As an old fellow once said if the forecast is for 4 good days you’ll get 3 ,maybe …We mowed on wednesday and again today looks like again on Saturday Wow . This is Haying . Right now with the moisture in the ground it’s taking us 3 days to bale dry hay .
June 16, 2012 at 9:43 am #74221Donn HewesKeymasterForecast is changing slightly. Now a chance of a shower tonight, tomorrow, and Tomorrow night. Hay making is nothing if not sporting. Will report in Monday morning.
June 16, 2012 at 10:13 am #74226karl t pfisterParticipant“Sporting ” Is one way of putting it , I think of it more in terms of gambling . Putting faith in charlatans ,who understand little of the variables of weather . Sometimes I look for a 12 step program for folks like us . Gamblers anonymous would cover only 1/2 the sins …
But I do love it when the weather is good and things are working right
But I guess the old timer was right again about June haying , Ya never get what you pay for .June 17, 2012 at 9:26 am #74222Donn HewesKeymasterGambling? Charlatans! Karl, Now your talking about my knotter on my baler. Please don’t jinks me. We baled about 325 yesterday after subtracting for all the twine we pulled out of the bale chamber. I hope to make 200 at the end of the field day today. Hay drying fast. I could mow in the morning and bale the next day right now. Donn
June 17, 2012 at 10:55 pm #74224Ed ThayerParticipantWe picked up 100 bales yesterday and another 280 today. Gotta make hay while the sun shines 🙂
June 18, 2012 at 3:34 pm #74219Does’ LeapParticipantWe baled 600 yesterday and have another 60 or so left to bale today. That will be the last of our first cut. We have one meadow that is ready for second cut……The never ending cycle:eek:. I feel lucky to have this ideal June weather.

That was the most we have done in a day. We had 200 ready to bale Saturday but I am at the Farmer’s Market all day so it had to wait until Sunday. It was a dawn ’till dusk affair with a good size crew picking up bales out of the field. We left the last two wagons in the barn on Sunday night and stacked them yesterday.
