I am not new to horses or the country life, however, I am a new teamster! After a lot of research, I have set myself up with a team of haflinger mares and a wagon. Once my skill set is honed, I hope to get started in draft powered agriculture. I would like to thank this community for all of the information I have received and look forward to becoming part of this learning community committed to improving practice. Have a great day!

I grew up in the Oneonta/Delhi area. Awesome to see someone else from my corner of upstate (though I’m currently domiciled in Iowa for now). Nice picture. Where was it taken, may I ask? Also, what kind of ag are you thinking of tackling? I’ve been itching to continue family’s dairying tradition and have been picking my grandmother’s brain for info about when her parents farmed and when she and my grandpa still used horses (into the late 40’s/early 50’s I think).
Anyhow, glad to see that I’m not the only new member!

It is good to have another member from NY, it is a great place to live, I miss it but VT is nice too. Welcome to the forum and we look forward to having you as a member.

Formerly from Scotia, NYPS EJB- where in CT? I may be moving there too and there are some good teamsters to learn from in CT.

Haflingers are a short draft horse from Austria. If you click on the picture in the first post, you will see a picture of them.

May 22, 2012 at 2:32 am #73868PlowboyParticipantJay, You can’t be too far away from us. My parents are on 205 north of Laurens with an Oneonta address. We are off cty route 11 near Mt Vision. We have mostly Percherons that we raise and train ourselves. I think for this area we do more draft powered farming than anyone. We had our annual plow weekend two weeks ago at my parents farm. In April my Dad and a couple friends along with my son and I plowed, dragged, drilled and rolled a field of oats all with horses and oxen. We hope to have a threshing day this summer if the guy with the binder and threshing machine comes through. Dennis
