Some of you may have seen this site already, but we have a parallel universe in the maple trade, and they even use vBulletin.
http://mapletrader.com/community/index.php
We found it looking for info about sap lifters and joined to discuss sap ladders vs. lifting tank for a new sugar bush.
Andy maybe they can provide some insight as far as discussion trends?

MarkDecember 20, 2012 at 12:45 pm #76323Livewater FarmParticipantspeaking of maple how do you all feel about usfda getting involved in sugaring and requiring sugar makers to register and be inspected as food processors
December 20, 2012 at 1:56 pm #76326Mark CowdreyParticipantI am broadly against it, as these efforts (such as USDA Organic) generally masquerade as food safety measures but operationally support large (corporate) endeavors and handicap small outfits. A little caveat emptor goes a long way.
MarkDecember 20, 2012 at 2:24 pm #76324Livewater FarmParticipantI agree Mark another play by goverment and big food to do away withsmall farmers no way can a small maple producer with a sugar house in the woods meet fda regulations hot and cold running water electricity maybe even a bathroom they will need a warrent to get on my property
BillDecember 20, 2012 at 8:44 pm #76328Ed ThayerParticipantI am against it as well. We have been inundated with requests from the USDA to fill out surveys, complete questioners and so on. I simply file this stuff in the wood stove. We have been making syrup on this property for several generations and I cannot see how the local, state or federal government should have any input as to how I produce, sell or distribute our product.
I think they got our address because we are members of the NH maple producers association. They even had a Federal Rep from the USDA come to an annual meeting try to make us into believe they were there to simply gather statistical information.
EdDecember 21, 2012 at 10:08 pm #76329henkdeminkParticipantMy grandparents raised their family with products of this small farm,
My parents raised their children with products of this small farm,
My wife and I raised our children with products of this small farm,
We are providing products for our grandchildren from this small farm,
But now the government says that this small farm is endangering public health ,
How can that be?Henk
