Come join us on May 19th 2012, Rain date of May 20th, for a day of helping our neighbors. We will be using draft animal power to skid wood from the forest to a landing and processing the wood at Longview Farm in Charlestown, NH. The goal is to work up wood for Ted and Nancy Walker to heat their house next winter. Bring your tools, trained draft animals if you have them and willingness to work hard for your neighbors.

We will begin around 9:00 am and work through the day. A pot luck lunch will be available so bring a dish to share. Rough camping will be available Friday evening and Saturday evening if you wish. Plenty of room for trailer parking.

For more info you may contact Ed Thayer at 495-3554 or ethayer@gsinet.net.

    Hope to see you there.

I was able to get out and try pulling some logs out today on the roads we’ll be using. The horses did great. We’re ready to roll, drag, and chop!
    Who’s thinking they’ll join us?

I’ll be there with Ripple and Reno. Ed will bring the scoot we built at the Farm School at the Athol event and we will get it broken in! Jennifer.

    Ed-
I am going to try to make it over for the wood bee with my team. I have to see if the dates work with my wife’s work schedule, which is in flux at the moment, but I will get back to you when I know for sure. Would my log arch be helpful or do you want to work on the ground? Thanks.

    Brad,

I am bringing a fore cart with an arch adapter on it for light wood. If you do come, your heavy arch would be great for longer skids and bigger wood. Maybe the singles could twitch to the skid road and then we can use the wheeled equipment to get it to the landing area. I will be meeting up with Jay in the near future to scope out the roads and woods. I really look forward to us all getting together for this.

I hope you can make it Brad. I didn’t get to see your team in action in Athol. Certainly bring your forecart, and the trails are dying out nicely. Everything that’s cut now is easily reachable. I’ll be putting more on the ground soon.

I’m really looking forward to this event and seeing everyone again. Are you bringing a team, Jim?

I just checked, that is only a hour and a half straight up Rt91 for me, are oxen invited to come play too? I can bring my new go-devil and/or a scoot I just bought yesterday and have not tried out yet.

    Tom,

We would love to have you. Oxen will be a nice addition.

We will have our local news 9 NH Chronicle there to do a piece for their TV show. It will give us great exposure and will help promote our mission.

    Can’t wait to see everyone.

Ed & I haven’t decided whether we’re bringing Balzac to team up with Ozzie yet or not. It appears that you may have enough “haulers”, so I’m considering simply bringing my saws along and be a “bucker-upper” on the finished end. Let me know your thoughts…..we’re pretty flexible.

Jim, We’d be glad to have you in either capacity. I figure when Ed comes over we’ll plan out the logistics a bit more and have a better idea what skills we need.

I think I’ll go put more wood on the ground- seems like we’ll get a good turnout. There’s a local 4H group interested in helping stack and run water for us. Good news from Chronicle too. I’m getting excited.

I just reviewed my summer work schedule and I may have this weekend free. I was offered a truck to borrow if this is the case, so maybe I will be able to make it after all. I would be bringing a pair of long yearling steers, a stoneboat and a dish to pass. I hope it works out, I am not doing my fair this summer and would like to get them to a new situation or two this year.

I have not really discussed it with my wife but I hope to come with my steers. They might be best at twitching and loading scoots for your bigger faster horses, but I’ll be flexible and have fun no matter what.

    Good Morning all,
We are closing in on the date for the wood bee. I met with Jay at his property yesterday to look at the lay of the land. This is a great property with lots of potential for future events and a fantastic view of the Connecticut River Valley. There is plenty of room to park trailers and cars. It is about 2,000 feet from the log pile to the farm and some of it is a gradual uphill climb. The logs are stacked on a pretty steep slope so we are going to build a log deck below the current pile so we can access them a little safer.
If we split the working teams up, we can skid from the log deck to the pasture, then from the pasture to the farmhouse. We would like to get an idea who might be bringing their animals so we can get a better idea how much help we might have.
Those who do not bring animals are welcome to cut, split or move wood or just simply watch and help in the woods.
I am bringing Oz and a fore cart and log scoot. Jen is Bringing a team I think and Erika might be up with her steers.
This should be a great day.

    ED
