Have you ever had something “pop” into your head for no reason at all and then continue to linger there for much too long? Well, that’s what’s happened to me and I’m hoping that by putting it on here I’ll be purged from it. The IT is the old “Frozen Logger Song” many of you might know (not the Monty Python “Lumberjack”) and my dad used to sing it (badly) when we went camping back when I was a kid (along with some other favorites like “Blood on the Saddle”).

So here’s the lyrics and get this thing out of my head already!

    The Frozen Logger
    … E ………………… B7 ………………………….. E
As I sat down one evening inside a small café,
    …………. A ……… B7……………………………………… E
A forty-year-old waitress to me these words did say,
    ………………………… B7 …………………………………….. E
“I see that you’re a logger, and not just a common bum,
    …………………….. A …. B7 ……………………………………. E
‘Cause nobody but a logger stirs his coffee with his thumb.

“My lover was a logger. There’s none like him today.
If you’d pour whiskey on it, he would eat a bale of hay.
Well, he never shaved his whiskers from off of his horny hide.
He’d just drive them in with a hammer and bite them off inside.

“My lover came to see me upon one freezing day.
He held me in a fond embrace which broke three vertebrae.
Well, he kissed me when we parted, so hard that he broke my jaw.
I could not speak to tell him he forget his mackinaw.

“I saw my logger leaving, sauntering through the snow,
Going bravely homeward at forty-eight below.
The weather it tried to freeze him. It tried its level best.
At a hundred degrees below zero, he buttoned up his vest.

“It froze right through to China. It froze to the stars above.
At a thousand degrees below zero, it froze my logger love.
And so I lost my lover, and to this café I come,
And here I wait till someone stirs his coffee with his thumb.”

Have you all ever heard that song before? It’s pretty old (obviously if my dad was singing when I WAS A KID).

I’ve got it on tape by Lonzo and Oscar. For you folks that aren’t up on old country music, they go back to the first radio shows 😉

Speaking of which, I heard a Paul Bunyon story says it was sooooo cold at the logging camp one winter morning that when the Cook went to pour the boiling coffee – it froze so fast the ice was hot!

Doesn’t make any sense of course, but what the heck – we know it’s getting cold around here!
