I have been working with my 12 year old daughter Zoe and her halflinger, Gretta. She rides this horse competitively in the local “Pony Club” and expressed interest in working her in harness. We have been working on yarding logs with her for the past 5 or 6 weekends. Zoe can now yard logs independently with Gretta. When she is fluent and completely comfortable with yarding, I hope to move on to twitching wood in more challenging diverse terrain. Here are some pictures:

I had mine out last weekend and let my 9 year old daughter drive them for a bit. Dad told me that is the sixth generation that he knows of that drove horses.

Teaching her to drive has worked out well and I am proud of her. 12 year olds are not always receptive to constructive criticism. I have tried to keep my comments to a minimum and Zoe has exercised patience as well. Once she understood basic safety issues regarding where she is in relation to the log and safely hooking and unhooking the log, I pretty much let her go with decreasing supervision as she became more comfortable. After one session of yarding firewood she said to me “now I understand why you spend so much time in the woods with the horses!” Cheers to that.

thats how my mom started! Her dad, a teamster, encouraged her. Oh the rest is all history! Bond with those kids!!

I know it isn’t quite as impressive, but our 8 year old, Bazel, was with me in the woods this afternoon, and when I returned to my team after felling and limbing a tree, I found him asleep on the bench seat of my log cart, where the team/cart was chained to a standing tree waiting for my return.
