The Yoke

A pair of calves I once raised,
grew to oxen and were praised,
for the rhythm they maintained,
while working even as they strained,
into a piece of well-worn wood,
a yoke, hand-carved so that it could,
span the power in the seam,
and join the two into a team.

A yoke is more than merely wood,
hewn from a tree, that’s understood,
but cut with thought and intention,
to enhance the connection,
and shaped to fit the space between,
then polished to a perfect sheen.

With purpose vested in the reach,
a soul can move into the breach,
initiative bound in the bight,
where teamster and the team unite.

I marked the use of ten good years,
working with these sturdy steers,
hauling logs and turning soil,
hard work that never turned to toil.

Yoked in trust they followed my lead,
right on through that final deed,
It’s hard at first to understand,
the task I took into my hand,
but my commitment to this day,
was to stand beside them all the way.

Though we worked on solid ground,
a finer place I know we found,
where three of us moved as one.
A fabric from our lives was spun,
and in the threads I can see,
our spirits joined eternally.
