I have just received word that teamster Ted Russell was flown to a Boston Burn Center after sustaining severe burns when his truck burst into flames yesterday evening.

Apparently, he was a mere 200 yards from home, hauling his team home from the Addison County Field Days, when his truck burst into flames. I guess he was trying to make it the rest of the way home when he was forced to jump from the truck, ON FIRE and ran around to the back to free the horses. The horses are unharmed and ran to the barn.

I don’t have any good information about how Ted is doing this am, but apparently he has 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 15% of his body, primarily face, hands and arms and will be undergoing skin grafting surgery today.

Please keep Ted in your prayers and if you live in his neighbor hood, please consider stopping by to see if their animals need tending to. I know Josie will be driving down to Boston today. Missy Clifford lives closest, I believe and can probably provide updates and share what help we can offer.

I feel sick. I spoke with Ted just yesterday afternoon and was looking forward to seeing him and Josie this weekend.

He is in our thoughts here. Lets hope for as best a recovery as possible, thankful that it wasn’t worse and that the horses are fine too.

Josie just emailed me and said the burns are less severe than originally thought (some were road rash from bailing from the truck). He had a skin graft to his right forearm, but everything else is expect to heal on its own with some physical therapy. Hands will return to full function….thank god. They have the farm chores covered, so all is as good as it can be.

News on Ted Russell – As many of you have heard Ted had a truck fire on Tuesday after heading home from Addison County Field Days. He was able to get his horses out of the trailer safely before collapsing from the serious burns he received on his face and hands. He was air lifted to Mass General where he is currently undergoing treatment for the burns. He will be there for at a least a week. He is doing ok and should have full functionality of his hands with some time and PT. Josie is able to be with him at this time.

I know many of us would like to help. Ted has helped so many of us over the years with our horses and by being a friend and mentor. We have started a fund to help Ted and Josie through this difficult time. If you would like to send some money please send it to GMDHA 271 Plank Rd Vergennes VT 05491 Be sure to put Ted in the memo line or include a note with it. There will also be an account opened at Merchants Bank on August 9th for this reason.

If you would like to send a note to Ted and Josie their address is: Ted Russell 3427 Route 30, Sudbury VT 05733.
